My mother has an apple g5 and she wanted something to record with so i gave her one of my mics. however i cannot find an input besides the optical digital audio input. so, is there a adapter for this? I have refered to the manual and there is no mention of 3.5 stereo input.

you need more than an adapter, since optical is sending digital input, and microphones are analog, you need another piece of equipment to do the work for you.

Short answer: this isn't going to work.

Optical input? That's odd.
If all you have is an optical input, your up the creek without a paddle. You will need another piece of equipment to record it sounds like.

A quick look at the apple G5 specs though, and it says for audio:
"Optical digital audio input, optical digital audio output, analog line-level input, analog line-level output, front headphone minijack and speaker."
It says you have a line line analog input, which you could try as well. (best option without having to go buy something).
Might be worth it to look at the computer again and see if you can find it.

~Good luck

odd, it has no mention of this in the instruction manual. however, on closer inspection of the rear of the case I do see a 3.5 jack, but this does not detect the mic. maybe the jack is broken?

Oh, Maybe the apple G5 was updated?
From the specs (under audio) http://www.apple.com/powermac/specs.html it just said it had that port.
Is this the port you pluged the mic into? (red circle)

If it is, chances are its not a borken port, but rather there is no "detection" that happens. (I'm not an apple OS person, so I have no idea).
Open up a sound recording program (not sure what apple includes with its OS) and make sure you select the analog input port (might be called analog input, or microphone, or something like that). Then, make sure the mic is on, and just start talking on it when you press the record button.

Does this work?
~Hope this helps

PS: Speaking of which, this question may also be good to post in the apple forum here. They will know more about this then I would, that's for sure.

Click on the apple icon, and open system preferences. Go to the sound options, and select input. You should have an option to select the audio line-in port. Select it, and you can adjust the input volume from there. If it is working, you should be able to see the bars light up if you test the mic.

There are adapters that allow you to plug toslink optical into a mini-plug optical. I have some that came with a few of my after market optical cables. It's not the same as a analog mic input tho.. even though it will snap in fine. Could this be what this is referring to? I can take a picture of mine when I get home.

kinda like this...
