Maybe I deserved this because I was cheating Symantec a little but it was also thier fault for not catching it sooner. That's not important now, what happened was I signed on this morning and my anti-virus wouldn't start up and when prompted to do a verification I got a web page that said my anti-virus 2005 was no longer available for update, so I ran out and bought a new 2007 version. When I tried to install it, it first asked me to uninstall zoneAlarm, so I did, then it told me to uninstall PoweQuests, Drive Image 7, so I did.
While I was at it, I uninstalled a player that was called Hot LLama that came off of my Alien V Predator movie. I got a message that it wanted to remove 2 files, one ended with an .ocx, the other, I don't know. What I do know is that when I re-booted my optical drives no longer appeared in the system and in hadware manager they had big yellow exclamation points on thier names. So, they show up in the manager but do not work.
I tried uninstalling them, I tried, removing the IDE cable from the motherboard, then re-starting, then putting it back, then re-starting. I tried, deleting the drivers, I tried updating to the latest drivers, the drivers show up as there but still no drives running. Oh, I tried System Restore and I still believe that's one of the most useless utilities that's ever been part of an OS. BTW, the OS is WinXP Home. I've tried the "repair" utility on the windows installation disk before but it always seems to end me right back at a complete new install.
If you know what these 2 files may have been or what may be wrong with my optical drives post here and I'll check back in a few hours, I'll give you my e-mail if you have the files and know where they go. As it is, I'm posting with no firewall and no anti-virus. If I didn't have an artificial leg I'd get down on my knees and beg. I just re-installed windows from scratch a month or two ago and don't really want to do it if not necessary.
Please help!! TIA, Brian
