optical drives disappearing ?

I am having a strange problem. :( My optical drives are disapearing. What I mean is that when I boot into xp everything is ok, but after a little while the optical drives are no longer in my computer. I started to burn a cd and it failed because the drive disapeared. I am kind of at a loss for words on this. Could my motherboard ide2 channel be going bad? Has anyone experienced this before and what did you do to fix it?

Well I did a step by step trouble shoot and it turned out to be my first generation dvd-r drive is no more. I cant belive I paid $300 for it and now I can replace it for $79. lol
