Optical drive won't open?

I have a dvd drive that won't open. Here is what happens when you press the eject button: The drive tries to open, you can see the tray physically move, but then the drive succumbs to the inability to push the tray open and gives up. So, what does this mean? Get a new drive? (would rather not as i am not yet working) is the motor for the tray mechanism failing, not so snappy in it's age?
 
Sounds like something's jammed. You can always open the drive up and see whats getting stuck
 
There should also be a little hole on the front of the drive that is the right size for a straightened paper clip to fit into. Poke the paper clip into the hole and keep pressing. You'll feel something start to give and the drawer should open. If the drawer doesn't open, something is jammed inside the drive or the gears are way out of alignment.
 
Try unplugging the power to the drive, then plugging it back in. It has worked for me in the past.

That is the only way to get the drive open when it is in my rig...

Does the drive work other than that? If so, I would guess one of two things. One: motor that opens the drawer is failing. It tries though, which I would guess wouldn't happen if it were dead. Second, drive tray is out of alignment. Do you have to push the tray closed after you have opened it manually (paper clip)? Or will it close on it's own when the machine is powered back up? If the drive is out of alignment, you can take it apart and try to realign the gear with the teeth on the tray. I've had varying degress of sucess with this. If you do open it up, make sure there isn't anything else inside it (change, credit cards, etc).
