Hey guys,

I had an old HTPC that I parted out and I have an internal LG 5.25" Blu-Ray optical drive laying around. I'm looking into rebuilding a new HTPC, and was debating on whether I should bother keeping the drive around, since I've been out of the loop for a while

Keep in mind that I have a standalone Blu-Ray player already, so mainly I'm wondering if bothering with a Blu-Ray internal drive is worth it. As I understand it, you still need to buy software just to play discs on it, which is an added cost, but it does give my HTPC some portability and flexibility

edit: I forgot to mention, but I'm planning on storing most of my media on a NAS, but I still have a ton of Blu Ray discs around

i have never inserted a disc into my HTPC in the 2 years it's been under the tv.

really depends on your habits though and how your setup to rip movies.

I keep an internal slim bluray drive (in an $10 external USB case) around just in case I ever need to use it. It mainly gets used for stuff I haven't gotten around to backing up yet.

Well, if the card is capable. I seem to recall all Blu-ray disc drives getting firmware updates to 3d capable. Unlike stand alone blu-ray players. Though if its super old, you would have to check. So maybe save yourself some $$$ and not buy a 3d blu-ray player?

I thought the 3-d capability had to do with the software and video processing and not the actual drive.
