My roommate has a new Macbook and in the specs it says

Combined optical digital/headphone out, combined optical digital/audio line in

What adapter would be needed to achieve the digital output?

TIA

Um, pics of the port you want to connect to? Mac technobabble, way over my head.

How the hell you cross an optical port with a headphone jack is beyond me, since one shoots photons and the other oscillates an electron current...

Er, that's just an optical adapter to swap between plug standards. No headphones.

Ashmedai, if you do a Google search for Macbook + Optical you'll see that other people have used this sort of adapter as well.

Okay...but...you still can't connect headphones to an optical port without something in the middle to decode the photons and generate an electrical signal. And that dongle you linked just lets you connect a normal Toslink cable to a Toslink-mini port. If I try to plug headphones into it directly, something is going to break.

Wait, I thought the OP's question was how to achieve digital output?

"What adapter would be needed to achieve the digital output?"

Sorry if I am misunderstanding. :(

You are correct. And thanks for the link. I figured it was something simple. My Googling skills just werent turning anything up.

For the record. She can use headphones as normal with the 3.5jack. She wants to hook it up to her receiver as a sort of "htcp". She has the mini-DVI-HDMI for video, just needed the adapter for audio.

Again, thanks a lot guys!

EDIT: Upon further research (now that I know how simple the idea is) I found this which is just perfect.
