Opteron worth upgrading?

I am wondering if it is worth upgrading to an opteron over my current A64 3000+ My system is mainly for gaming and some dvd ripping... If i were to upgrade it would be to a 144 or 146 and maybe overclock it... Would I see a noticable difference? my current system is

A64 3000@2400mhz
1GB PC3200
Msi 7800 Gt 256 Mb
evga sli mobo
 
maybe, maybe not. those a64 3000+'s are said to be good overclockers. They say they can reach like 2.6ghz which is good. I have an Opteron 170 overclocked from 2.0 ghz to 2.7 ghz @ 1.5v. The opterons are said to be unbelievable overclockers, but that A64 should be able to reach 2.6ghz so if you can oc your 3000, just keep it, no sense in wasting money on a cpu that can overclock about the same as the opteron you are talking about. I don't think you would much of a difference at all.
 
Can you get your 3000+ any higher? I'd say for you to even notice a difference, you'd have to get an Opteron to run at about 2.8ghz. I went from a 3200+@2.4ghz to an Opteron 146 that can run 2.9ghz (I run it at 2.8ghz for daily use). I can definitely notice a difference with the Opteron. However, when my Opteron was clocked at 2.4, I could only notice the difference in games. The Opteron just felt smoother.
 
I am still on stock heatsink and any higher the temps get to high for my taste....

I think your more likely to find that is the result of the increased cache.

Although I doubt there was a significant fps gain
 
I didn't do any precise testing. It was more of a "seat of the pants" feeling. But you're right, probably no more than an extra 10 FPS!

I'd say 5fps..
 
HL2 saw like a 10-15 FPS benefit from 4600+ to 4800+, FWIW.

I would only do it if your hobby is OC'ing and have disposable cash.
 
Even with 2 x 1mb cache, there's only a 2-5% fps increase in all of the testing I've seen.

Get a better hsf and see how much higher that 3000+ will go. You're probably better off waiting on getting a new cpu, and just save a few more bones for a 7800gtx for gaming.
 
Imho, not worth it. If you were to go dualcore, thats another story.
