opteron questions

if i oc a 3200+ to say 2.4-2.6 how much temp would that give off? compared to the opty 144.

and if both at stock, would there be any noticible speed difference between the two?

Going by AMD's own performance scale. The 1.8GHz 1MB 144 is a 3200+. Does that help?

Noticeable speed difference? Not really, maybe the 144 would be a little smoother in windows because of the 1MB L2 cache, but you won't be able to tell the difference as far as speed.

Actually, it would be a A64 3000+. Unless you are accounting for the L2 cache size increase, which AMD sometimes uses as a reason to give some CPU's a higher PR rating.

Which does make some sense. I benched my Opteron 246's and they came out to being somewhere between a A64 3200+ and a A64 3500+ in performance for games and standard apps.

Okay, im really pondering the idea of getting an Opteron now.

The 146 s939 seems reasonable, but the problem is I dont know where to order one from...
In terms of stepping CABNE > CABYE > CABGE how well does the CABGE faire?

I know my oc luck has it that I will get the CABGE or some LETTUCE that will not be the best.

Also, to get those OCs that I see, will DDR400 suffice? I would aim for 2.2ghz for the 3700+ equivalence then dream about 2.7. Do I have to be more focused about specialty cooling? I was intending to get a zalman...

cabge oc's like any other a64, typically 2.7-2.8ghz, with some variation ;)

If you get the zalman (and I'm assuming you are talking about the 7000 series) make sure to get the all copper zalman, not the al-cu one. Yes DDR 400 will suffice, you will just have to run memory dividers. Make sure you get some ram with good timings too. Hitting 2.2ghz on an opteron 146 is practically running it at stock, as that is only a 200mhz bump, (20mhz htt/fsb) and it should be able to do that in its sleep.

yes, especially when you consider that my 146 almost does 2.9ghz on stock voltage ;)

I see, so theres hope either way. Looks like my best bet to get one of these.. the challenge now is to find one before my mobo goes

finding them for a price close to what AMD says that they cost in quantities of 1k, is the problem. I, too, am considering to get one, for my F@H rig, but first I must see how well my A64 3200+ does.

whats the reason for getting the all cu one vs the alcu?

On the monarch page
"NOTE: In order for Motherboard to POST with this CPU, the latest BIOS NEEDS to be installed."
O_O how would you install a new bios when it cant post?

you istall the new bios with the old cpu in place.... and beforey ou say "what if i buy a mobo along with this chip" well then if its a new mobo then its supposed* to have the newest bios

I just picked up a 146 from Monarch for 199 and 6.70 shipping........ man I hope it is CABNE or CABYE...... :D

my dfi nf4 posted with an opteron and a bios that was made back in march ;)

same thing, the HT link is actually ddr, so it's like calling 200mhz ram 400mhz effective ;)
