So I have an Opteron 165 clocked at 2.2ghz. Would this be faster that a stock C2D E6300 at 1.86ghz? Go in on the Retail Edge so I have toe C2D and Intel motherboard which doesn't overclock at all. Trying to decide which one to go with......overclocking is an option but would need a good stable board with onboard optical audio output.

Should I stay with AMD or sell that stuff and stick with C2D???

My X2 3800 at 2.4 was beat by my E6300 at stock speeds... lol...

With Clockgen you could easily overclock the CPU to a decent speed. Even at stock, an E6300 would perform much better than your Opteron.

Yup, I knew the c2d would be the better performer yet I still chose to go with the Opteron 165 for my new rig. At least I can still sleep at night :p

I just got two 3800's for christmas.

    130 a piece.

The e6300(which i considered) was 180 a piece. Plus the premium for a intel socket mobo.

Is th 6300 that much faster to warrant the premium? I mean I know the 6300 is faster...but how much....and is the 50+ price difference worth it?

When the 3800's were 300 bux they were outta my price range....but for 130....I took the bait. Throw in a good nvidia 6150 motherboard....and Im good to go.

You can get a E6300+DS3+high-end heatsink for around $350. Overclocked, a system with those parts would be faster than an X2 3800+ based system by a very large margin.

    A stock E6300 isn't THAT much faster than an X2 at 2.4...

But who keeps an E6300 at stock? lol?

Thats 150 bux more than I paid for my 3800+ parts.....and u still need a video card, depending on what ds3 u are talking about. And no DVI for the ds3 for built in video....so no go for me.

    ?
150+ dollars for extra points in benchmarks>?

    Nvida 6150 AM2 with a 65watt 3800x2 is a better value.

You paid 200$ for an X2 and a board?

And you're not using a video card? What do you do on that computer?

I was assuming it would be used as a gaming machine. For a cheap all-integrated rig, it's a completely different story.

For gaming, the extra =~100$ for the conroe system is very worth it...

For an Integrated board, then I agree, AMD takes the cake there.

On my computer(in mah sig) I mostly play BF2 @ 1600x1200 4xAA 16xAF in fully populated 64 men servers with plenty of FPS to spare.

With the cheapo 200 dollar dual core hot rod Ima have a file server/HDTV movie player/torrent box/family internet box.

    Thanks for the reassurance fellas.
Just making sure I wasnt crazy for getting an AMD x2 after the conroe bomb hit. I mean I know it's a sick nasty architecture[conroe]. But I dont think Intel matches up well in the 130 dollar dual core price range right now.

Yes, from a pure gaming standpoint, a Conroe is not a requirement, in the least.
