I'm currently running a P4/AGP rig, and thinking about switching to AMD/PCI-E - but I want to stick with socket 939 in order to keep my DDR1.

I've been considering an Opteron CPU, but am not very familiar with the technology. Does anyone have a good motherboard suggestion to pair with either an Opty 165 or 170? I would prefer an ASUS board but I'd be open to others if folks have had good experiences with them.

Also, are opteron systems mainly dependent on O/Cing for performance, or do they run well at stock speeds?

This will be a gaming rig.

Thanks in advance.

well the asus a8n line will probably be your best bet if that's the brand you like

i personally have a dfi nf4 ultra-d and it rocks

the opterons are born overclockers so i'd recommend doing it .. why not?

when it gets a little cooler i'm going to see if my cabqe will do 3.3 prime stable...

Thanks for your suggestions Malicious.

What do you think is the most I can O/C with stock cooling?

depends on the sample but you can cherry pick one from the fs forum that will do 3ghz on stock volts for <$100. I paid 90 for mine and it's a golden sample chip.

edit: stock volts (probably) = stock cooling

get a 165 and a DFI mobo. because it has a 9x multi youll need a board that will do 300+ HTT (FSB) and not all mobos will. but all DFIs will.

my 165 that i just got from newegg for $159 is a CCBBE 0615 that does 3.0@1.45

the FSB for 3.0+ is 334

Great, thanks alot guys. I think I will give the DFI a try.

I actually was thinking of taking the 170 over the 165 as it's only 20$ more - unless there is a reason not to.

No reason not to, The 170 should make it easier to obtain higher clocks. It should be easier on your ram as well.

Hardforum.com - my new favorite site. Glad I stumbled across it =D

Thanks for all the help guys.
