Opteron 170 Temps

Hey guys, had a few questions I know someone can answer.
Just got my new Opteron 170 installed in a Asrock 939Dual motherboard.
Just using the stock heatpipe cooler w/ some AS5 for now.

Currently its sitting at 2.6Ghz @ 1.4v, temps are 42C at idle, havent done any stress testing yet thought.

My question is basically what temps i should consider too hot, and how much farther i might go on stock cooling. I'm pretty damn happy with 2.6, but more is always better :D

Any thoughts? and can someone give me a good link to download prime95 or a variant to do some stress testing.

Thanks.

please keep me posted with ur overclocking adventure, i just bought a 170 too, and i wana know how far ti can OC

Well your stepping is the best indicator, but ultimately no two chips are the same.

As for OP, I personally wouldn't go above 55-60c, but that is just me.

So can anyone explain to me this little anomoly.

Right now im running SpeedFan 4.28 to read mytemps, and the CPU is at 43C.

I installed the AMD CPU drivers from the dual-core gaming fix sticky, and the temp jumped to 55-56C at idle.

Uninstalled the driver and its back to 43C. What's going on here? is this normal?

Any help would be great.

Thanks all.

30C Idle here. 52C max during dual prime.

I have the AMD driver and the windows hotfix installed.

nobi125, my cpu is the exact same stepping as yours.

Just for fun I lowered the voltage back down to stock and it primed @ 2.6 overnight.
From reading more here im pretty sure i put WAY too much AS5 on though. I'll scrape it later today, hopefully my idle temps will come down....40C currently.

I'll let you know what happens.

EDIT: while priming overnight, max temp was 52C

thats an ok temp...

your temps should go down by 2-5 degrees when u reduce th as5

Well, scraped the AS5 down and temps dropped 1C....now at 39/51C idle/load.

I'm happy with 2.6 at stock volts...but i definitely think this chip will do more. Will wait for better cooling though.

Gonna grab either a Ninja or a Tuniq Tower 120 next time i get 50 bucks. Then I'll try for 2.8 which would be glorious.

Thanks for the help.

I have a feeling there's something wrong with the temp probe on your mobo.

Unless you live on the sun.

So did you end up using the AMD driver or not?

lol.....better than england i guess...tax is only 10% :p

yeh temps seem pretty high with the new amd coolers...still try the scythe with a good fan on top

Yeah I reinstalled the amd driver again, and this time my temps stayed the same...prolly just tweaked last time somehow. Oh well.

Ill update again once I get a better heatsink.

Thanks guys
