Have a question to lob out for you all....

My opteron 165 w/ AV8 is crashing and it seems to be some type of video card related crash, but it should'nt be.
When I run my fsb at 250(2250mhz), everything runs fine...I can play games and run two instances of prime95, no issues.
Anything above the mid 250's and I crash before I can get any game to load and I get an MS error report saying I crashed because of an infinite loop that was related to the video driver. Sometimes CS:S will make it to the select a team screen. I can also load CS without loading the game, but then it freezes when I go into the video options.

The odd thing is that I can get to 290fsb(2610mhz) and run dual instances of prime95 for 8 hours straight and do lots of other things. Its totaly stable....so why is my video card crashing after 250fsb? The bus is locked as far as I can tell. Thoughts?

Temps also don't break 58c. I've also tried the video card at default speeds, no change.

You're not overclocking you PCI-E bus are you? Is your PCI locked?

Without looking your board up, I fear it's a VIA chipset? They are notorious for the "infinite loop"

Aiya, I feel like its not the video driver as the issue only occurs above 250fsb....anything under 250 and I dont get video driver crashes. The microsoft error report says its an infinite loop issue with my video card and tells me to update my driver or replace my vid card. The AGP bus is reporting as being 66Mhz.

Sphere, I'm going to search it, but do you have any further info about Via chipsets and the infinite loop error? It is a Via chipset.... It would make sense that the chipset is giving my problems at super high bus speeds. Any further thoughts or info would be appreciated

Sal,

I've been a member of http://forums.viaarena.com/ for some years now, and this problem has been present for quite some time in conjunction with ATI cards and Via chipsets. I don't think a *fix* has been found, but I'd head on over and take a look at the faqs and the forums themselves.

Once you get there, if you need any help, lemme' know. I go under Jomo.

Good Luck

Thanks for the info. It would appear from all my research that the AGP lock on this chipset is faulty once you get into the 160ish area.
