I need to know which is the best card of the following, for 1024x768, high settings, and a stable framerate:

x850 pro
x1600 pro

im not positive but i think x850. it has a better gpu and clock speeds. but x1600 has the newer features. but both would give good performance based on your criteria.

Other than having SM 3.0 I would say the X850 bigtime. I loved my X850 and it OCed like mad unmodded on watercooling. I would say it is one of my most favorite cards I ever owned.

If you dont really, really want SM3 get yourself the X850.

Get the X850PRO. It has significantly better performance than the X1600PRO. Like what everyone else has said, unless you really need Shader Model 3.0 (read: HDR), then go for the X850PRO.

nothing about SM3.0 has to do with HDR, the X850pro supports HDR, just not FP16 HDR, if you play games based off of the source engine you will have no problems with HDR.

the X850pro is a good card, i'd go for that unless you really like having fun tweaking a card, cause the X1600pro has a shit ton of nooks and crannys you can mess with, but its still a slower card then the X850

Thanks guys.

I found a Connect 3D Radeon X850 Pro for $190 (including $30 rebate). Is this a good deal, and is Connect 3D a reliable brand?

I play games off the Battlefield engine (I will getting 2142 when it comes out) so how does it fair with this engine?

The X850 pro is 2x to 3x better than a X1600 pro. A X1600 pro would be hard pressed to keep up with a 9800pro. Terrible card.

Okay, thanks guys.

Here's my dilemma. I am going to college soon and such, so I need to save up as much money as I can. However, my current card is dying (geforce 6200) so I need to upgrade my card in order to play the games I wanna play, but I am limited to AGP since I don't have the money availible to upgrade my entire computer.

I am looking for a good AGP card, and the x850 seems like it might be it. I know the 7800GS is better, but for the price, it's hardly worth the extra 10 or so FPS in games. Not to mention my processor (AthlonXP 3200+) would greatly bottleneck the 7800GS.

Also, how does the 6800 fair against the x850 is terms of playability of current and future titles?

Opinions on the matter?

Yeah, well, OK, but only Source engine games then. Every other game engine requires SM3.0 to run HDR. And that's a lot of unsupported games.

Still, X850PRO is the way to go.

To the OP: You would not be bottlenecked by a 7800GS, your processor is more than fine. But I wouldn't get it simply because it isn't worth the price you'd have to pay for it...

No, that price sucks.

Here is a Good Deal:

Basically, ATi Xseries cards are all made by Sapphire. The other manufacturers simply put their own stickers on them and repackage them.

I would say X850 Pro. Especially at that resultion. the X1k series excells at 16x12 or above and would be a better soltuion there. I agree with the above posters here and also vot X850 pro.

you are set with that card, solid resolution, max settings, probably low eye candy, the X850pro is definetly your card for that game, although if you do want to save money and get the X1600pro you will still be able to game just fine.

Yeah, well, OK, but only Source engine games then. Every other game engine requires SM3.0 to run HDR. And that's a lot of unsupported games.

thats also incorrect, theres only one game that with the "sm3.0" option enabled in the settings will enable HDR, and you have no choice with that option, and thats SC:CT, and still HDR does not require SM3.0 to run, especially the type they enabled in that game

very few games out there will run FP16 HDR, a patched (and non supported feature at that) of Farcry, GRAW, Serious Sam 2, and Oblivion have this.

Am I missing something?

Why would you recommend him to buy an X850 Pro over an X850XT when the X850XT is at a lower cost?

I would also reccomend getting the XT variant of the X850. You will easily hit XTPE speeds too.

OK --> I meant it requires a SM 3.0 card to run HDR in those scenarios. I think you know what I meant.

...and there's also Age of Empires III, Lineage II, Battle for Middle Earth 2, etc. And more are coming out that require SM 3.0 HDR.

i don't know if you understand it or not, SM3.0 has nothing do with HDR

Lineage2 from my understanding, unless they patched it in, does not use HDR, neither does AoE3, both use bloom effects which you can get the full use out of that with a Ti4200.

Battle for middle earth, don't even like these games that much haven't kept up on it, but is another game i haven't see reviewers use any type of "hdr" option when enabled

when it comes down to it, the type of HDR most played can be dispayed with a 9 series ATi card or a FX series card and thats from source games, FP16 HDR which pretty much only made an appearance with cards that has SM3.0 support (no the two are not linked) are on very non-played games, save for oblivion

OK. I will say it again. Those games I mentioned require a SM 3.0 CARD. Every single SM 3.0 CARD supports this type of HDR in addition to SM 3.0. A good way to figure out if the game you have supports this type of HDR is to see whether or not it supports SM 3.0. I know HDR has nothing to do with SM 3.0, I said that like five posts ago...!

Actually, you're wrong. They both have HDR support. AoE3 has bloom effects you can enable instead of HDR if your card doesn't support it. I'm pretty sure it wasn't patched in, as both options have been enabled since the games reached retail months ago.

Again, it does too. Well, I don't know about Battle for Middle Earth, but Battle for Middle Earth II (the one I mentioned in the first place) definitely does.

OK: I know the two are not linked.
And the only games that don't use FP16 HDR but still use HDR are Source games, to my knowledge. That doesn't make them "most." And "very non-played games" is just wrong, tons of people have played AOEIII, Lineage II, FarCry, Splinter Cell: Chaos Theory, Serious Sam II, etc...

He asked between a X850 Pro or a X1600 Pro and gave no links to price. I simply said between those 2 models and at that resolution 10x7 the x850 pro would be a better buy over a X1600 P. sorry for the confusion

Np, I was going off of what he said that he found an X850Pro for $190 (including $30 rebate)...
