I'm about to buy these headsets after doing a lot of research on other sets. Unfortunately, not much is written on these ones, so I would like to see if anyone can recommend these (or not recommend these).

I need 5.1 surround headphones with a microphone for extended periods of play on Battlefield 1942 and future games.

Here it be:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16836502004

I already scoured the "post your headset" thread, but couldn't make out any clear winners in my price range, or that were actually 5.1 with a mic.

Go here and click on "Experience 5.1 Channel Surround Sound". Listen to the demo on normal stereo headphones, making sure to disable any 3D effects on your soundcard first (this would mean disabling CMSS if you have a Creative card).

Current soundcards, through application of special filters in software or hardware, apply similar effects to 3D game audio when you have headphone mode properly configured. Creative's new X-Fi will improve upon the Audigy 2 implementation and produce an effect that is AT LEAST as good as Dolby Headphone, AND it will simulate up to 128 virtual sound sources rather than 5.

I have these Headphones , and they are very very good. Now don't mistake me, I didn't say they replace a high end set of cans, but for gaming and everyday use they rock. Don't listen to the naysayers and self righteous "Gawds". They get a kick out of trashing things they have not tried.

In all seriousness, I have tried 5.1 headphones, and Dolby Headphone and similar tech is simply better, ESPECIALLY with good headphones. Did you follow the link and play the demo?

Better is Subjective. Chasing the Technology Carrot ain't my thing. I have the Headphones the original poster linked too, and they work very well. Thats all I am saying. I didn't say they were "Better" or the "Be All End All" of headphones

It seems around here the mention of 5.1 Headphones sends out the signal to all the bash nerds, thats all..

Just listen to the demo. If you are not impressed, then I don't know what to say. From a purely scientific perspective, it is OBJECTIVELY better.

Jeez... now you've got me started.

Turtle Beach makes a "5.1" set for the XBOX as well. The funny thing is, it doesn't even take a Dolby Digital input! It just takes stereo analog inputs and performs some kind of matrix decoding (probably cheap) to get "5.1" channels. I'm not even sure that the XBOX matrix-encodes (Prologic or Prologic II) its multi-channel sound for the stereo analog outputs.

If these other Turtle Beach "5.1" headphones are part of the same product family, then they are crap by association, EVEN IF they do accept 6-ch analog inputs.

I'm amazed that Turtle Beach, a somewhat respected company in the realm of computer audio, has jumped on this bandwagon.

Seriously, Why get your balls in an uproar? This is exactly why I generally read, and not post on boards like these. Yes, I did listen to the demo and it is impressive, but not signifigantly different than what I am experiencing with the headphones I use.

I have no experience with the Turtle Beach Products for the XBOX, I don't own one. Creative Labs makes Entry Level Soundcards too, Does this automatically make their high end stuff crap? Come on now.Get over yourself.

I have these, so I'm not formulating this opinion out of B.S.

They are not good.

The bass is extremely weak and falls to pieces when the volume is worked up. The treble is too tinny. I have 10 dollar headphones that have better comparable audio quality, if not better. And yes, I tried burning them in and it only made for a marginal improvement.

Very comfortable headstrap setup, the bars on top are adjustable but firm. Microphone boom is excellent, incredibly flexible, and the detachability is very useful. The extra wires are very handy.

And the surround sound? I noticed a distinct improvement in the ability to track the exact location of enemies in front of me, but these headphones were no help for enemies behind me. It did help in gaming overall, I'll admit that.

The in-line volume control light is unbearable. Y'know those keychain LED lights? It's one of those. It's not a little light trying to glow pretty, it really is one of those LED flashlights. it shines a giant circle of blue light on the wall 5 feet away. It is goddamned bright. I have to adjust the volume with the thing turn upside down so the light faces away. I thought gamespot was BSing me when they complained about this light. They weren't kidding.

I might recommend these if they were in the 30-40 dollar price range, but as it stands it's WAY overpriced.

I'm going to go look for some nice stereo headphones.
