I currently have an AMD Athlon 64 4000+, and I was wondering if it is worth upgrading to an Intel Core 2 Duo E6600?

I use my desktop for movie/sound/photo editing, moderate gaming, and playing movies.

It the upgrade really going to make a difference in performance? I was also looking at the E6400, which only has 2MB L2 cache instead of 4MB. Should I just wait until I can afford a Core 2 Extreme processor?

I know I'd have to buy a new mobo, and new ram. I'll most likely keep my video card until I can afford a 8800GTX.

Any advice is well appreciated. Thanks!

If you are doing all those things to make a living I would give a definite yes for the upgrade to E6600. You would save real time thus making more money.

If what you are doing is just for you and a few minutes here and there of lost time really bugs you, again, upgrade.

If you just want to upgrade for the sake of trying something new and money is no issue go for it.

As for myself I’m a bit of a freak at being an early adopter and always want the latest and greatest. My last Intel “upgrade” was a P-4 800 that did 3.2 with no problems. No problems except AMD was kicking butt back then and that was the last Intel product I purchased until this system.

EVGA 680i
Intel E6600 over clocked to 3.5 running 24/7 at full load
2 Gigs of Corsair 6400 DDR2 (wasn’t happy about having to buy new RAM)

I’m not a big time gamer either and I use an EVGA 7900 GS KO, I switched that card from my previous main system to this one.

Is this system faster then my Opty X-2 at 2.7 with the same amount of RAM, yes. On the other hand the speed difference doing the chores you mentioned along with a lot of PhotoShop work isn’t mind boggling either.

The E6600 is the only one of your list I would recommend as best bang for the buck, it’s a simple over clock and in the end will save you some bucks on RAM.

I have run Vista Ultimate on both the Opty and the Intel, again, it’s a tad faster.

I won’t upgrade again until AMD releases their new product. AMD has never disappointed me, ever. Intel has, several times.

Just another opinion to add to your list.;) :)

I only want this upgrade to make a difference in the processing time. I don't think I'll have the patience to overclock too much if I get the new processor. So the overall difference it would make would be nice to know. I too like to keep up with the latest hardware, but my checking account will only allow me to spend so much. I'm waiting for my tax return checks to arrive to buy new parts. :D

Thanks for your help!

The upgrade should be 20-40% faster at stock speeds.

Course, you can overclock the chip to 3.0ghz by changing 2 values in the BIOS... With almost an 99% success rate...

You SAY you won't overclock it, but you don't have one yet ;)

Well, after seeing as to how complicated OC'ing AMD processors was what with having to change Mem. clock values also, it was just too much for me. But if OC'ing the intel processor is as easy as you say, maybe I will give it a try.

What the hell easy to overclock INTEL as compare to AMD? I thought AMD was easy as compare to INTEL.
