Currently running this config:

Q6600 @ 3.6
4GB ram
8800GT 512

I game at 1680x1050 since I'm on a 22". The 8800GT has served me well over the past year and a half, but now it's starting to show signs of its age. I don't see myself getting a bigger monitor anytime soon.

So here is my question. Do I jump straight up to a 5870 or buy something a little cheaper since I'm not pushing the resolution that high?

Wait until ~11pm tonight for the 5850 review and judge from that. I noticed a big jump in performance from an 8800GTS to a GTX 260 core 216, and that was just going from one generation card to the next, you'll be skipping one. The $100 or so you save getting a 5850 (if it winds up being a good performer, which I think it will) can go towards another one later for Xfire if you feel it's not up to par and your board supports it.

5850. Save yourself some coin.

I use a 19" (1440x900) and I'm just going to skip the 5870 and go directly to the 5850.

I'm contemplating the 5850 also as I too game at 1680x1050. Personally I expect the 5870 to be overkill at that resolution, but let's hold off for a few hours and get the [H]ard truth about the 5850.
