I bought a 9800GX2 thinking they would provide a 6pin to 8pin adapter... well they don't so I'm curious what do you all think I should do?

Don't you have a adapter from another GPU package ? I have 3 packages and all 3 include a adapter of some sorts.

 
If that's the only card in your system it will probably run it I assume the system is a quad of course. Surely one of the other cards you got came with that adapter. I think they do that on the GX2 to discourage using an adapter.

Adaptors are cheap almost everywhere, usually two four pin molex in and a 6 pin out.

The one concern I have is since you will be folding on that GPU and giving it a work out you will probably be drawing close to the full 40 amps. If you have a quad CPU that takes 12 more or so.

Assuming you have a quality PSU that leaves you with about 5 AMPS for the motherboard and drives and RAM.

I'll be the first to admit that 5 AMPS is a very conservitive guess but I'd hazzard a guess you are pushing the envelope.

I'm assuming the card has the 8 pin socket and probably you have a left over 4 pin plug for a CPU ........so, with a bit of creative modding you could make one really easy.

You could also use the 6 pin from your PSU and pull a yellow and black socket from a 4 pin molex and slide those into place as well, at least until you call the manufacture and bitch them out for no adaptor;)

Again, I'm going by your description of the need, so if I mis-stated pin counts let me know.;)

3x19= 58amps, 40 for the card 18 for the rest of system.
 
I'd put up a WTB thread on the For Sale / Trade forum.

 
MYOCable imho, just make sure your CPU/Mobo is on one rail and the GX2 has access to the 2 other rails and I'd call it good. The card will draw some power from the PCIe socket if it needs more than the 2 rails can provide. I know the GX2 is a beast but 40a is 480 watts into one card.


 
Your fine with 550W according to the [H] review of the xfx 9800gx2 at full load w/ a qx9650 cpu total power draw from the box was 365W.

I figured I was not going to breach 450W even with a Q6600

So ok I'll pull out the soder gun, wow its early why does soder look to be spelled incorrectly.

Also, I forgot to outline that the 8 pin PCI-E have 2 extra ground wires, no current pass there. I think it's probably return path to be able to feed more power (I'm not electrical engineer so I might have tasted a bit of my feet already).

 
Well my franken plug is made. I decided to use the center pins off the molex 12v for those 2 grounds. Just in case. I shrink wrapped it.. and if you didn't know better you'd probably think it was made that way :p heheheh

Well the GX2 is up and cranking out 4700PPD per GPU... at stock... I figured I'd make sure it is stable first before playing with the OC... Its pulling 297w with out the CPU being loaded... I have both SMPs off line while I test.

I'm wondering if Rivatuner will play nice and let me OC both GPUs...

Are there any other tools out there to OC multiple GPUs?

 
I'm very happy riva tuner played nice with both gpus... they are at 600/1850/900 each now and churning:

5386 PPD each. I'm trying to determine how far I should push it... I mean the above is not too shabby. I guess I'll go check the temps... that could give me a feel for how much room I have. Fan is set to 100%

Wow the cards are pretty chill'n at 72c and 73c... I'm thinking I can push 1900 shader and maybe return the memory to stock of 1000 and maybe add a touch to the cpu... but first is first seeing the max for the shaders...

Moving just the shaders to 1900 nets 5530 PPD per GPU. Temps are 73c and 74c. I'm thinking that is good enough out of this vid card for longevity sake.

 
Is a system based on a GX2 the best bang/buck when you look at a whole system? I mean thats a ton of PPD from 1 PCIe slot, which eliminates the need for super mobos with 3 or 4 slots.

You would think so except that the GX2 cards are still very expensive ranging from $300-$450. You can get two 8800gt's for under $300 and the popular quad pci-e slot board is $150. GX2's also have higher power requirements than 2 8800gt's.

 
The only reason I got my gx2 was the $255 AR deal last week. I mean come on, you can't beat the PPD:$ ratio on that.

 
I got the GX2 for 285 shipped from newegg... so basically 2x the cost of 8800GTSs... can't complain they are producing well.
