I am in need of advice. I recently go a new hard drive (250gb 16mb cache maxtor) in place of my 120gb hitachi drive. Don't ask me...but I somehow formatted the partition (through windows disk management) of all my data on my old hard drive before moving it onto the new hd!

What programs or procedure/actions should I take to recover this data?? The partition is still there...

And secondly, my plan is to use my 120gb as a backup to my operating system/programs. Is there such software that automatically backups/images my OS every month or so? Is that possible?
 
There is a freeware program called 'Drive Rescue' that can find data on accidnetally deleted partitions. Download http://www.woundedmoon.org/win32/driverescue19d.zip and read the documentation, and see if that can help you. I'd imagine it can. I hope you did a quick format - a full format will toast the data on the drive beyond recovery. The article you linked to applies only to Dynamic disks, which I doubt you used.

Also, there's a backup utility built into Windows, you can schedule backups using that.
 
there are a ton of recovery programs.. i think i tried diskprobe once a long time ago.. but you had to type the exact path of each file you recovered... i used umm.. objectrescue to get pictures off my CF card after i accdently formatted it in my camera.. http://objectrescue.com/

there are tons of programs though..

as far as backup goes.. i am sure a lot of different backup programs could be used.. in veritas for example.. you set the hd as the backup media.. maxtor has software that is used with their external drives for backup.. and i am sure there ar emore.. i just don't know of any specifically off hand.. well veritas maybe, but that would be overkill...
 
In addition to the above programs, i've always had great luck recovering from my stupid mistakes with getdataback. It's pricey though :/
 
I'm currently using a legit copy of FileScavenger to pull data off a friends drive that windows decided to chkdsk on him. It thought everything was corrupt/orphaned and started removing them before he killed it. Pulled about 37Gb off so far.
