The other day I eluded to building a new desktop and today I began checking what I had laying around for the new build. I really like the tower I've been using because it is very large and leaves a lot of room for water cooled setups. I actually have two of these towers; one was used for a build I did for a relative that ended up being butchered by the staff at a local computer shop after he some problems while I was in Iraq in '08. He couldnt wait for me to return to fix it and ended buying another rig and abandoned this one. Since my tower has a few modifications and is in better shape than the one I acquired from my cousin, I decided to hack his up for the project instead. I'm thinking about having a wrap made for this tower, mouse, and keyboard (that Xbox controller that an acquaintance did would look good) so the blemishes on this tower wont matter.
I've spent the last few day scoping out the hardware for this project and I think I've got it figured out. I originally wanted to build an AMD platform because the bang for the buck with the Phenom II 555 was tough to beat (and it would give me a lot to tinker with which is what I really enjoy) but the water blocks I wanted to use arent available. So now I'm looking at using an Asus P6X58D-E motherboard along with the cheapest i7 I can strap to it. For me, it has to look at least as good as it performs; logical people will spend the majority of their money on the components but me, nope, I usually have more invested in the tower/cooling
EK waterblocks will be used for the motherboard chipsets, fets, cpu, and video card and I'll probably go with the Koolance memory blocks because they look so clean. I have 2 BlackIce Extreme radiators from the towers now and will add a Swiftech 320. I'm planning on using the 2 Black Ice radiators (single 120mm) in series to cool the video card(s) and chipsets while the Swiftech cools the fets, cpu, and memory. I'm planning on running orange dye in one system and blue in the other in the hopes of making something somewhat unique. I have a few tricks up my sleeve to help separate it from the pack so stayed tuned.
Current configuration (been sitting in storage for about 3 years in reality)
Under UV lighting only
Tower 2 (ie victim)
The mayhem begins!
Just discovered that the side panels are interchangable from left to right so I'll have 2 windows to work with. Not sure what I'll do on the back since that is usually where I tucked all the uglies
Tomorrow I bust out the jigsaw and Dremel for some necessary "trimming."
