so my computer can boot windows xp but i have to share my computer and its become filled with a bunch of garbage and has slowed down significantly

ive been trying to reinstall the operating system but my windows disc either hangs at examining my xxxxxxx megabytes of hard disk or gets messed up cuz when i reboot i have to select the operating system and my Linux disc hangs every time when its loading never gets to the desktop and i know the discs are ok

so should i wipe my hard drive clean or what i see these programs that say people do it before they throw it out to protect from identity theft or whatever are you still able to use the drive after you wipe it and is this the way to go all these sights claim the data isn't gone when you delete or reformat

i think this may be a problem because with this drive i have re-installed different variations of windows xp and linux and it now says its a 114.5gb drive when i bought it it was a 120gb drive any suggestions/advice on wiping my drive or getting it not to hang would be great

Okay... I'm not trying to be an asshole, but I had to read through your post several times before I could figure out what you are asking. Punctuation... it's your friend.

Assuming I've managed to decipher everything correctly, it sounds to me like you need to reformat you drive and start over. Use a GParted Live CD and delete everything on your drive. Once that is done, use the disc to make a 30g ntfs partition for XP, a 30g ext3 partition for *nix, a 2g swap partition and use the rest for storage.... Then go ahead and install your OS's on the appropriate partitions.

If you decide to trash your drive and are concerned about privacy, you can use a utility like dban to nuke your data before you throw it out...

As always, just my opinions... hope it helps...

If it hangs when the windows cd is examining the size, there might be errors on the drive. try a 'chkdsk /f'

i got it to work i just deleted all of my partitions with my hard drive disk utility and reinstalled windows xp it was such a pita to get it to work

now can someone direct me to the appropriate part of the forum im gonna make a thread asking for help with converting video files from .flv i think thats what it is, the flash video one into mp4 or avi i cant decide where to start this thread
