operating system on seperate 40GB Harddrive

Hi, I am just building a new system and I am going to get a 250GB hard drive. I was wondering if I should get a smaller harddrive, 40GB just for the Operating system (XP pro) and applications? Would the system run better? Or should I just partition the 250GB hard drive and put the Operating system on it?
 
It is best to put the OS on the hard drive that is the fastest. If both are the same speeds, then either one is fine.
 
Umm... Hard drive speed is not just RPM. Maybe you're aware of this, but your response makes me wonder a bit.
