Anyone else thought of this too?

Would be interesting if an interface was designed to maximize productivity using the Oculus Rift as an evolution or alternative to the basic desktop design used in Mac, Windows, and common Linux distributions.

It may eventually happen, but I think it's a long way off. Implementing a desktop environment where you can look around to various windows probably wouldn't be that hard, but what use is it by itself? You still need some way to interface with the system to manipulate the environment. (Potentially this could be controlled by a kinect.)

When you say "maximize productivity" what features are you thinking of? In my opinion, a current interface based on this technology would only be the first step and likely just a novelty - and thus most likely to show up in a linux environment. That being said, I would definitely experiment with the desktop environment if it were released open source.

I think it's a non-starter. An OS that exists within augmented space makes compellingly good sense; an OS that exists in virtual space, given the availability of one that exists in augmented space, makes none.
