Operated Systems Outdated?

Could it be possible that the desktop Operating System as we know it is reaching the end of its life and will be replaced by things like virtualization?

On the one hand, we are confronted with splashy operating systems news heralding new OS generations and directions and features, from the long-awaited release of Microsoft's Windows Vista and the new twists in Apple's Mac OS X to the peculiar maneuvers of Microsoft and Oracle regarding Linux—which, if nothing else, state loud and clear that Linux is an operating system force to be reckoned with.

Unless you have something else that will run as a layer between the programs I run and my computer's hardware, operating systems are here to stay.

Is it just me or was that a horribly written article? Perhaps i'm a little slow in the head but I didn't really see the point of it either. Linux is great and all but sucks as a Windows replacement. Apple wants to run Vista on its hardware so they can say consumers don't need to buy a PC, they can run their great OS on Apple and if they must use Windows they can do that to.

Yea, come all aboard you Windows user to the Mac, that way you can buy expensive hardware and make Steve Jobs richer. I get annoyed at all those "Mac vs PC" Commercials that Apple makes, for they never mention that the PC is probably cheaper than the Mac. Oh, it has a built in camera, big deal and in a couple of years you'll stuck with it and want a higher resolution one. Ooops, sorry back on topic. Operating Systems will get to the point of totla voice recognition (Star Trek), but that's a ways off in the future (considering we don't blow ourselves up first ).

I agree, HORRIBLE article. They say virtualization will kill the OS, but what pray tell, is running the virtualization? Sure specific optimizations that BEA is doing my bypass functions that the operating system performed, but it is not going to do squat for most people.

This article seemed like nothing more than a rundown on each OS company and what they may or may not do in the future. Nothing in it provided concrete evidence of any major shift in Operation Systems.

I think it's pretty obvious that they're trying to imply that computers will become self aware and as such will constantly be modifying their internal circuitry to act as a brain of it's own. Given that this dynamically modified hardware is so advanced, we will no longer need an operating system to manage things...
