Opera vs. IE

What does Opera offer me that IE does not? Why would I want to use Opera over IE?

I'm looking for feature reasons, not "because MS sucks" type reasons.

IE works fine for me, but I do like to try new stuff. I've got Opera installed right and am playing with, but are there things that IE will do that Opera can't?

I've already tried FireFox and wasn't too impressed with having to install a bunch of plug-ins to do stuff that I can do by default with IE and it seems with Opera.

Anyway looking for pros and cons. Thanks.

Opera - Tabbed browsing, better performance(no joke), not a giant security hole, built in d/l manager(don't quite remember for sure, think it does) all around I just can't think of many reasons to choose IE over anything, not MS bashing, just the truth. Im liking firefox so far, but that's me.

Firefox was ok, but I couldn't get it to work with one shockwave site that I like. Even after downloading the plugin and having it say it had installed correctly.

I just gotta be able to see my badger. :D

I looked into it at the FF forums, but the suggestions there just didn't fix it. The page works fine in Opera. Anyway. Thanks for the response.

The best feature about Opera for me is mouse gestures. Haven't discovered them yet? Hold down the right mouse button and flick your wrist to the left. It will tell you the rest, if you haven't tried this yet.

My other favorite thing about Opera is the integrated google. I know that it is no better than the google toolbar for IE, but it still kicks much ass.

for me.. main reason why I use ie is most compatibility with sites and flash/shockwave..

not sure if it still applies with opera still as its been ages since I last tried it

i liked IE engine but it lacks many features.. luckily i found myie2 which has everything I could possiblily ask for

Opera is better than IE in many ways.
- It does in fact have better performance and will render webpages faster than IE. The only time I have found Opera to be slower is with 56k, in that case IE is sometimes faster.

- It has a built in search bar that can point to just about any search engine you want.

- It features tabbed browsing which is so much better than filling up your taskbar with a bunch of IE windows.

- It has a really good built in pop-up window blocker. As you have already discovered if has

- Mouse Gestures, as you have already found out

- It's does not have as many security problems as IE and does not get attacked nearly as much

- Certainly seems more resistant to the spyware crap that webpages like to download onto your computer. I make my sister use Opera now because I got tired of cleaning up all the crap that IE let webpages install.

Security

because all other browsers arent as closely integrated with Windows, they are inherently more secure, and of course fewer exploits are written specifically for them as well

I'm going to jump on the mouse gestures bandwagon. If security alone doesn't convert you, then the mouse gestures will.

FireFox 0.8 works for me on that site also, all 3 PCs on our home network.

Once set up, FireFox is very stable. Only issue so far is that the compose window in Yahoo mail doesn't show the buttons for adding font styles (bold, italics, etc.) and others.

Of course, Yahoo's support page says that this feature only works for IE5.5 and above, so it is not a flaw in FireFox (or Netscape or Opera or ...). I am beginning to dislike browser-specific coding on the major web sites, especially since 99.9% of it is geared toward IE!

Plugins work now. Firefox got an installer at version 0.8 and that fixed most if not all the plugin issues. Anyone that got frustrated with shockwave or quicktime not working should try giving firefox a second chance.

After reading this thread I went to try out mouse gestures for Firefox with and I most say I am loving it still learn how to us them all but it is great :D

There are certain things in FireFox I cannot disable that just irritate me, but I'm still using it. I might give Opera7 a go, I downloaded it but haven';t installed it yet.

how about firefox compared to opera?
I never really noticed much of a difference between the two other than opera had everything installed by default

Two of my problems with Firefox are that

1) Minor - The easiness at which you can organize bookmarks.Opera is much better by far.

2) Major The ability to copy some of the words in a hyperlink and either paste them into a document or use them to google with. With Opera all I had to do a minor edit on the menu.ini and I was done.

But Firefox also doesn't need to load a pic from its' source everytime a webpage is viewed for the first time the brower is opened up.

1st off, regarding your unhappiness with Firefox: the reason they don't include such a stunning package as you may find on Opera or IE is because they don't want to bloat the browser anymore than they have to. This way, it allows you, the end user, to be in almost complete control of what enhancements you want your browser to have. After all, they can't anticipate what each user wants and individually tailor the browser to everyone's needs as they download it. The only way they can allow for such a high degree of customizability is through plug-ins...

Opera is better than IE because of:
1. Mouse Gestures :D:D:D
2. Pop-up Control: i) block all pop-ups ii) block no pop-ups iii) allow only requested (clicked on) pop-ups.
3. Tabbed Browsing.
4. Integrated Google Search.
5. The ability to change the above integrated search to a search engine of your choice.
6. A supportive (forum-based) community.
7. Cookie management.

Now, Firefox is better than Opera because of:
1. It's not bloated.
2. Plug-in control lets you customize everything.
3. A larger more supportive community.
4. An easy to set cache size option.
5. Cookie management.
6. Carat browsing.

i'll add more when i think of more.. i hope this helps.

in short, use Firefox :D

you also forgot that the full version of firefox is free :p

Freeware == teh win!!! ha ha

Peace

With a plugin, firefox also has mouse gestures. I use all in one gestures, works quite well. I've also found the opera chokes on a number of pages, where as I've never had an issue with firefox rendering a page.

Is this plugin on the FireFox website? :p

I've been using Opera for a few years now and love it, the new 7.5 is excellent and very fast, however I like it because;

Fast Browsing
Tabbed Browsing, I Love it
Built in Pop-Up blocker works very well
Built in Download Manager is great
Built in E-mail client works very well and has an excellent Spam Blocker.
Excellent Newsgroup Reader
Mouse Gestures Rock
Chat Client isn't the greatest but it's functional and does work well.
Very Nice "Delete Private Data" controls (ok I'm Paranoid).
Easily Skinable with Ton's of Skins
Loads of options to tweak it just the way you like it

Is it the best out there ? I think so but either way it's worth a try :)

not a giant security hole
I'm a Firefox guy, but that pretty much said it all about why Opera is better than IE. Now that I think about it, almost anything is better than IE. :D

I love Opera, pretty much every reason I like it has already been listed. In fact I liked it so much I bought it because I wanted to support them. Another big reason I like Opera is because they are the group that keeps raising the Bar on what a browser should and can do. They were the first with integrated tabs, they were the first with mouse gestures, they were the first with built in pop-up blocking. Since the browser is their main business and they are a for profit company they have excellent incentive to continually improve their product, which they have done for the 4+ years I have used it.

I now use their built in mail client and I can attest that Opera is extremely stable on my Win2000 box. It is a rare occasion that I have to use IE for a site, I am finding that most sites now are Opera friendly and I identify my browser as Opera. (Note: you can tell Opera to identify itself as IE6, and several versions of Mozilla. This sometimes helps with compatibility issues)

IMO you are not practicing safe computing if you regularly use IE or Outlook. There are so many excellent alternatives.

Opera, IE6 and Firefox all have varying degrees of correctness of CSS. Certain things render better in some than others. I have to say that I prefer IE6 and Firefox over Opera for standards compliance.

That's my own personal preference.

Im firmly in the Opera camp but if Firefox was ever to duplicate the wand feature that Opera has I'd swap in a heartbeat.

Just as a random act of curiosity, how is opera faster than anything else?

I generally go images off, that cancels an awful lot of the stupidity on the internet, plus I have uncapped downstream cable. I click and pages appear.

The only exception to that is [H] - I click and the page may appear in a few seconds... maybe in a few minutes... often not for 12 or more hours. Indeed, sometimes literally not for a day or more.

Everyone says Opera is 'faster' though... can it be any faster than nigh on instantaneous? Does it really make a difference that's worth switching from IE and Firefox to it?

I don't think that speed is really measurable on the whole. Its faster for people who go to certain sites with their specific browser. Just because it loads a certain page faster doesn't mean its faster in general.

I choose FireFox over Opera because i like the tabs and favicons better in FireFox then Opera. There are a few features in Opera like the notepad and side bar hotlist that i think is a great idea and would like to use but my bookmarks are the most important thing to me in a web browser and i like the way their set up in FireFox the best.

Whoo... I thought it was my ISP being crap that kept the [H] from loading. :p

The first rule of [H] forum problems is that you do not talk of [H] forum problems. The second rule is you get banned if you do... at least that's what a lot of people have told me. Maybe it's just the way they complain that's the issue. We may never know.

But yes, I do find sometimes that I get 'page cannot be found' for up to a day, sometimes more but I don't check every hour so it may come up for brief periods in between :)

Heh. Whatever.

I occasionally cannot get any page to load, [H] or not, so it isn't a big deal for me. I need a new ISP, though.

Regarding the speed of Opera, I find it just seems to react faster than IE although I would'nt say it's instantaneous. The newest 7.5 Beta is alot leaner (Install Size) and seems faster than 7.23. I have no experience with Firefox so can't comment on it either way.

That's what's bugging me. How does it 'react' faster? What does it actually do that is 'faster'? Is this mysterious 'faster' enough to justify changing browsers? I'm just trying to understand what the 'faster' is here.

Not strictly true
however posting threads is strongly discouraged,
PM a Mod or Admin, or ask a forum mate if they are experiencing the same issue, it could be a forum issue, it could be your ISP, or internet traffic issue (especially when the is a nasty worm loose) it could be your system\browser

in effect beteen all those there is typically some member with an issue
so we would always have a thread on the subject

troubleshoot your end first, (check other sites)
then the ISP (I use 3d Traceroute Freeware and Advanced Features)
then PM a forummate to see if they have an issue (might still be your end cookies, security ect)
then PM a mod

but in truth, if we experience a problem we discuss it in the Mods Corner and are already probably aware of it ;)

What will get you banned is not following the rules or ignoring a Admin or Mods directives
(but generally you get several chances, unless its an egregious violation or a drive by spamming) :p

what is the deal with the badgers?

Anyway, my 1st venture onto FireFox is with .8 and I'm going from mozilla. Any plug in install detected and worked with firefox fine for me. Its very fast and small, clean. I'l definitly be sticking with it even though it is still a beta.
