Well I'm in the process of building a home storage system and have all my parts except the hard drives for the main storage. Currently the system consists of the following components.

  • Intel® Server Board S3210SHLC
  • Intel® Pentium® Processor E6300 (2M Cache, 2.80 GHz, 1066 MHz FSB)
  • 2 x SuperMicro Low Profile 3Gb/s Eight-Port SAS Internal RAID Adapter (AOC-USASLP-L8i)
  • Norco RPC-4220 4U Rackmount Chassis
  • Norco RPC-4220 modified fan board (from cavediver)
  • 2 x Kingston 4GB 800MHz DDR2 ECC CL5 DIMM Memory (KVR800D2E5K2/4G)
  • 2 x Western Digital Scorpio Black 160GB 7200RPM hard drive (WD1600BEKT) (mirrored rpool)

I plan to run OpenSolaris with 2 x RAIDZ arrays (9 and a hot spare). The problem I have now is what hard drives to buy.

I am going to buy 10 now and 10 later. My options are as follows.

  • 1.5Tb 1500Gb Samsung 32Mb Cache HDD Hard Drive HD154UI SATA2 EcoGreen AU$149
  • 1.5Tb 1500Gb WD SATA2 HDD WD15EADS 32Mb SATA 2 Hard Drive IntelliPower GP AU$140
  • 1500Gb 1.5Tb Seagate SATA2 HDD 32Mb 7200RPM Serial ATA300 Hard Drive ST31500341AS AU$141

  • 1000Gb 1Tb Seagate SATA2 32Mb HDD 7200RPM Serial ATA300; NCQ Hard Drive ST31000528AS AU$108
  • 1Tb 1000Gb WD SATA2 HDD WD10EADS 32Mb SATA 2 Hard Drive IntelliPower GP AU$105
  • Hitachi 1Tb 1000Gb SATA2 16Mb 7200RPM Deskstar 7K1000 Japan brand Hard Drive HDD AU$97

I am leaning towards the ST31500341AS 1.5T Seagate, but I have never used Seagate always have had WD so I am little cautious. I keep hearing about the TLER problem with WD drives so I am steering away from them too.

The Hitachi 1TB look good too as they are fast and cheap. I have 20 harddrive bays so filling it with 1TB now and migrating to bigger drives laters shouldn't be a problem, probably save me some cash up front too.

I don't want enterprise drives as this isn't a enterprise solution. :-p

What do you guys think?
