Hi People of the [H]ard kind,

Has anyone used a Live USB of openIndiana?

I'm not interested in the install process but rather how well it works? Or should I say how it works from a use case point of view?

I'm currently using freeNAS and always intended to trial openIndiana for various reasons on my home box, but without a specific USB image and with this being a Live flavor, I'm just not sure how it works with the persistent nature and/or how it stores data.

Any info on the live USB of openIndiana is appreciated.
 
You will not be happy with OI on a USB stick. It is unusable slow.
You must use a Sata disk or Sata SSD

If you like a real USB bootable readonly system, based on Solaris/Illumos, look at SmartOS

Thanks for the SmartOS suggestion. I'm coming to the conclusion that openIndiana isn't a good fit for disk-less.

Keep in mind, that SmartOS is mainly a Cloud and KVM OS. It is not a NAS/SAN or general use OS out of the box.
Could be tricky to use it for a NAS.

If you like a "run withing minutes" and comfortable NAS solution, you should think about a Sata bootdisk and
OI or eventually OmniOS where you have stable releases with bi-weekly updates intended for NAS and server use.

I understand its a Virtual Platform. I've seen it before, but wasn't aware of the work gone into it, its nice having ZFS there, but its interesting it uses it as a single vPool for VM's. It is however possible to install napp-it on SmartOS, but I understand peaces are missing. The problem is I don't have VT-d and I'm currently not interested in installing a Virtual SAN/NAS. Zones I'm happy with, due to there nature.

I've come to the conclusion that OmniOS with CF (still investigating CF for writes) is what might happen, but I don't think there as forward as openIndiana but there more server, which I prefer. It looks like openIndiana and OmniOS both have the same issues for disk-less operation.

Now has anyone got OmniOS working on a USB. I think it will suffer the same as OI.

I run the last version of OpenSolaris on my home NAS. Works perfectly from USB. Only thing I added was _Gea's napp-it. My OpenSolaris is mostly used for backups, thus I only switch it on when I need it. I would say it boots in a reasonable amount of time.

Only issue is that there are no updates to OpenSolaris, but at least I have a stable system.
