I see this option in a few games and Google Earth.

Just curious, Which one I should be running on a Radeon 9600 pro and the system in my sig.

Which one would give better performance?

DirectX generally runs faster on ATI hardware. nVidia is generally awesome in OpenGL. Of course, they will both run fine on either.

True, but every minute amount helps.

That being said *switches google to Dx*

when i run opengl in CS on my 6600gt, i get a 99 fps, doesnt go lower. EVER
i run on DirectX, i get 99 fps standing still, i move around or shoot, i drop to the 70s.

Which is what Deja said, opengl generally runs better on nVidia, Dx on ATI.

It all depends on the application and how efficient both implementations are.
OpenGL isn't necessarily faster, not even on NVIDIA cards. You should try each application separately, and choose which is best.
Apart from performance, the visuals may also be slightly different, that may also be a reason to choose one API over the other.

Everyone uses the opengl option anyway for that game (obviously I don't know if everyone actually does and I'm sure a few don't but you get the idea :p)

i get 99fps with my GEFORCE 2 ULTRA in CS. but then when i move around it can drop to as low as 75, even lower in smoke
