Hello,

I'm interested if anyone is aware of a project that is similar to DataSynapse's GridServer. Basically, it presents a virtual environment that processes can run on and performs allocation of backend, clustered resources.

For instance, you can load and run Windows 2008 server on a cluster, by running it in GridServer's virtual environment, and GridServer will take care of the offloading of processing.

This is extremely useful, because migrating software to a distributed computing platform would require a lot of time and effort.

Any assistance is appreciated.

Thanks,

Matt

Hi there,

Maybe you’ve heard of a tool called Terracotta, it’s not exactly the same as GridServer but it also allows you to distribute existing Java-based software without needing to migrate, because the clustering works at the JVM level. Terracotta is open source, but keep in mind there are still maintenance costs and it’s not always really “free”. By the way, as a user of both platforms, I should tell you that there are major performance issues that arise, you should think of a monitoring tool to check what happens to the performance as you scale up, I have used a tool called ClearStone which monitors all the popular distributed computing platforms, including DataSynapse, you can check it out here: http://www.evidentsoftware.com/products/clearstone-for-tibco-gridserver/
