Open Headphones?

I'm considering purchasing Sennheiser HD-497s to upgrade from my $10 Sony headphones and I'm a bit concerned about the fact that they're open, as I have a roommate. What I'm wondering is just how much noise comes through? Can other people hear it, or is it loud to them? I tend to listen at pretty reasonable volumes.

Also, whats a good closed set for around the same price as the 497s?

I'm using HD-650 now, and it leaks a good amount. If your roomie is in any way irritable to noises while sleeping or etc, you'll have a problem. :D

I bought mine so I can listen to it while my gf is sleeping, but last night she told me to put it down... :p

I'm still a little vague about your budget, but HD-280 Pro is a great set of closed headphones. If you want isolation, both from outside noise leaking in or music leaking out, they are a very good choice. If you buy them, be sure to run them for 96 hours or so at slightly over listening volumes with some Bass heavy music. They need a serious break-in to reach full potential. While they benefit from an amp, it is hardly mandatory

They are currently $79.80 over at Amazon w/ free ground shipping.

I don't know how loud you play your music, but personally the leakage seems almost unnoticeable at any appreciable distance.

more than a couple of feet away, you can tell there is some noise, but it also depends on the noise floor of where you are listening

Thanks everyone

Do the HD280s require a dedicated amp? Thats something I'd like to avoid purchasing at this point. Also, there is a decent amount of ambient noise generally. Would it be better to get closed headphones for this fact alone?

If it is noisy and you have to consider about bothering anyone even the slightest bit, I would get closed headphones.
