I have rediscovered my preference for a 5.1 surround system vs a headset, which is making Teamspeak/Ventillo use a chore.

Does anyone have a recommendation for an open ear headset with mic? I was almost thinking of just grabbing a cheap non USB Plantronics or Sennheiser PC3.

Non USB (2x 3.5mm) and a noise cancelling mic a plus.

noise cancelling and open ear is not going to happen.

Usually open ear will have bigger soundstage, less empesized on bass and more detailed, but less inmersive, closed useually are less detailed but more fun.... its all about tradeoffs.

If you want open ear, look into Sennheiser PC 363D High Performance Surround Sound Gaming Headset or Audio Technica ATHADG1 Open-Back Gaming Headset.

A really good combo Philips Fidelio X1/28 Premium Over-Ear Headphones + V-MODA BoomPro Gaming, VoIP Headset Headphone with Mic (Black).

Now if you are willing to go closed headphones for some blocking of otuside noise, and dont want to spend that much, HyperX Cloud Gaming Headset - Black (KHX-H3CL/WR).

Bah I should have clarified noise canceling on on the mic. Fixed.

Also to clarify I am looking for something that I can use for voice coms only, with the in-game sounds coming from the 5.1 surround speakers.

I have a pair of Corsair H1's which are ok for general gaming, however are closed.
 
Its hard to use speakers and expect a microphone to cancel the noise, but for example in mumble you can use eco cancellation and to some extent cancels the sound that its entering and going to your speakers.

My suggestion is get a good microphone, im atm using Rode Podecaster, but had in the past a very good experience with the Blue Yeti, not that expensive, and incredible sound, now setting the noise cancelling you will have to depend on the software. I usually im with a 5.1 setup and the usb mic, and work ok (i use push to talk), then when gaming i swap to the X1 + vmoda.

Now if you have ambient noise aside from whats coming from your speakers.... then the yeti will grab it, then probably look into headset solution.
