So Newegg keeps selling open box Asus 290x cards. Is the DCII worth it or would it be better to spend more to get a better card?

Buy it if it's a good price, call ASUS immediately to verify your warranty... A lot of good it will do you though.
90-days, return it. 3 years, keep it.

They're refurbs.
And yes Newegg is lying to you.

They were on there for $496 + shipping.

I've had a Sapphire Tri-x on back order since January for just over $600 but I'm really getting tired of waiting. I might just cancel my order and get one of these open box guys instead.

Look at the reviews. I wouldn't pay near MSRP for an open box with reviews that say it's unstable and the stories dealing with Asus RMA. Plus, they're going for ~$400 on Craigslist.

Petty much all the "open box" Asus items listed on Newegg are refurbished items that carry a 90 day warranty. I would double check the warranty period but that's what I was quoted a while back. They come in a plain white box with minimal if any accessories. If the price is right it's worth a gamble imo but that's a decision you have to make yourself.
