Been working through some driver issues, to the point that I am pulling cards out of the system and re adding them one at a time.

So I have an ASUS HD6950 reference out and I blow some air through it, wow, lot of dust. Ok, I guess these could use a good cleaning. I have read lots of threads about poor TIM application from the factory so I figure hey, I'll have a look in here.

Get the plastic cover off ok, pull the heatsink...and almost all the thermal pads on the memory rip in half, its like they are soggy and decomposed or something. I have salvage pads around here but these are of a softer consistency and appear to have glass fibers in them.

I am concerned that the pads I have on hand might be too thick or not conductive enough, and that just application of TIM will be too thin, so I fear I am one card down until I can find a replacement set of pads.

Any ideas?

I have seen reviews where they took the sink off and this did not happen.
These cards have been running 80-100% for several months.

If you are planning on pulling the heatsink off your older 69X0 you might want to have some 0.5mm pad on hand.
 
After cleaning up, one painful solution would be to apply TIM, re-assemble, then disassemble again to see if it made contact or not ...

So the three that are clean, were they even touching? It seems odd. Oh I see, those are the three nearest the fan.
 
I wouldn't worry about it honestly. If you put thicker pads it shouldnt hurt anything. I would just clean off where the pads were on the heatsink and memory before putting new ones on.
 
yeah. obviously I'll clean it up.

I flog the piss out of these cards, don't want to take any chances, got some pad ordered up from Sidewinder.
