is it normal for them to leave a small package outside the door when UPS delivers it?
this is not an apartment building but a house.
i find this to be disturbing.

or am i being paranoid?

First, that would be UPS doing it not newegg...they dont own ups.

But its not unusual to do it, unless it requires a signature.

they usually leave pacages in front of my garage. it has nothing to do with newegg, its the carrier.

It's all the carrier, and yes, UPS will leave packages on a doorstep. To avoid this I have them ship to my work, or a relatives....

UPS is the one that is leaving the packages. I have often wondered what would happen if someone took the package before I got home. Would UPS be held responsible since they just left it sitting on my front step, or am I just out a couple grand?

ups tracking says delivered.
there is nothing in front door step.
when neighbors get a package, they put it on the steps to go upstairs to my house (like a two family when you go in the door there is door for floor one and door to go up to floor 2 but this is indoors)
and i dont see any package, unless they took the package with them which is odd.

i guess ill talk to neighbors first before losing my mind

I'd talk to the neighbors, then call UPS and see what's up... Find out where they delivered it, and who did.

I find this very distrubing too. I live near a main street and I have no front yard or any of that kind. The first step I take out my front door is the side walk, I hate it when UPS or Fedex (happened a few times already) just leave stuff at the door. I have a couple of things that was stolen from me already, I complained alot to Fedex but never got my money.

Sometimes I can't understand these delivery guys, I mean it is the sidewalk and especialy if the box say 20" LCD monitor, they just leave it there. Or maybe they just took it for themselves.

Damn those carriers

Yikes.

Can you request that UPS take your package(s) back to the distribution center if no one is home?

I have experienced UPS trying to hide packages where possible, although I remember them sometimes lifting the welcome mat and putting something underneath it, kind of like in the car when you put a shirt or a coat over the TV you just bought. :p

i've been here forever.
the neighbors when they get a package they leave it on my door (inside the main door are two doors, one going up to me and one for their floor). so for them to take the package and hold it till i get home is, well, unreal.

at this point something is wrong.
ill get to the bottom of it.
i want my freakin sata drive and i want it now

Well UPS when my dad ordered a monitor (a really nice 24" samsung from Circuit City) left the box not even on our porch, but on top of our mailbox! Out for everyone to see and easily walk up and snatch and it had the Samsung 24" monitor logo everything all over it so they could've easily known what it was. I would've at least guessed for an item that expensive they would've required a signature, but I guess UPS just gets lazy sometimes?

I feel completely the opposite. UPS and Fedex here won't leave things on my porch even if I proactively leave a note on the door. Since I always work I almost always have to go to their hub to pick up the item, and that's a ~1.5 hour round trip.

I used to have a waiver on file with Fedex allowing them to leave things so I shipped everything that way. They no longer allow this.

It drives me nuts because I'm on a non-thru street and you really can't see my porch from the street.

Yeah, it worries me too when I have hundred(s) of dollars of stuff in plain sight on my doorstep (a good indication that no one is home) and is easy to steal.

Unfortunately, about the only thing you can do in the future is to either get a po box or check if they do signature confirmation. Or what others above have said.:(

But its not unusual to do it, unless it requires a signature.

Actually, it's Newegg. If a signature is required (and recipient hasn't signed a waver), then they will not leave it without someone signing for it or having the little yellow slip signed before they redeliver the next day.

If you seller doesn't want to allow for the waver or for someone to sign the little yellow slip, they can require a direct signature. With fedex (and perhaps with UPS as well), you can even require an adult to present a picture ID before signing for it.

The fact is it's quite a bit cheaper just to ship without a signature. If they have insurance on the shipment and it's stolen from your doorstep, they'll collect from UPS. As one who's had a shipment lost by UPS, I can honestly say that it's a major PITA to do the insurance claim, but it may be easier for a big company like newegg.

Luckily it's the winter and people aren't as frequently out-and-about, but I'm sure it could still happen.

I'll have to see if I can have stuff sent to my work, although I'd hate to have Receiving mess with my personal property, I mean, waste time messing with my stuff and not business-related material :D

well let me ask you this and its something i have to look into also:
by default is a signature required unless waived?
i need to know before i call newegg and in the meantime i'll try and read what they say about that on their site

I have had UPS deliver a package to the wrong address, they couldnt figure it out, but luckily the person who recieved it came to my house to drop it off.

As far as them leaving the packages, I prefer it.

I cant be home all the time, and its a hassle to have them keep trying to redeliver or for me to have to go to the dist center 20 miles away to pick it up.

UPS insures all packages for at least $100 by default, so I guess they figure, the money lost in a few claims (that can be written off) is less than the cost of constantly trying to redeliver.

I DO have a large cover entry way thats a ways away from the street though.

:)

If a UPS delivery person leaves a package outside, and it gets stolen, the driver is responsible. Therefore, it's entirely up to the driver's discretion.

You could probably find out on the UPS website.

I want to say that standard UPS shipping does not require a signature, and that the other options that cost more might have it as an option. Not sure what constitutes them needing a signature though. At previous jobs I'd have to sign for packages from both FedEx and UPS, but I never figured out if it was because we were a business or if maybe the shipper requested it for records.

"Signature required" is essentially a checkbox. Default is off. It doesn't cost extra (not for my business, anyway). Virtually any delivery option can be set to default on for a given account.

By the way, this thread will likely be locked with the suggestion of discussing it in GenMay.

Are you sure about that? I'm a FedEx driver and I'm not responsible in any way for a package being stolen.

Unless a signature is requested at the time of shipment, I'm not required to get one for a residential delivery. Only if it's an international package.

I'm pretty sure UPS operates exactly the same way.

Of course not. Signatures are required for business deliveries by default anyways. Checking that option for a residential delivery does add a fee, however.

UPS delivers, not newegg. I believe that you can tell UPS to requires a signature to deliver parcels to your place.

I like my UPS lad, he is always good to me and leaves my stuff so that I do not need to be home.

I'm sure. If a driver leaves a package without an in-person signature, the driver is responsible for it. I've been told this directly by UPS and by a friend who was a UPS driver a couple years back.

I believe the idea is that this prevents a UPS driver from either simply going home with packages or dumping them off to an accomplice.

It was just a sata drive? ...

I had FedEx say I signed for an item when I didn't...and it was one of my 37'' Westinghouse's. They decided to sign for me and leave it outside my house(granted it was on the side of the house, but still can be seen...) I checked the online tracking info that day at work to see when the 37'' beauty would arrive and it said "Delivered and Signed for by: b Sherrill" I was like WTF!!, nobody is at my house?. So I had to leave work to see if it actually was at my house, and it took me awhile to notice it was on the side of my house.

And it said "Westinghouse 37'' 1080p Monitor" on the box all over...lol tell me if someone saw that, they wouldn't want it...

bottom line
drive is lost.
neighbors dont have it.
who the hell do do i call?
UPS tracking info will say who signed for it, if anyone.. if no one signed for it, it will say where it was left.

What does it say next to "Signed by"?

Then call UPS.

That would have been hard to resist for even the most honest among us. Damn nice monitor, glad you still had it.

call UPS with the info and I'm sure they will help you out, it may take a while but it will be resolved.

Both FedEx and UPS leave stuff either in my garage or at my front door if no one is at home, I prefer it because I get the stuff, but it does make me nervous to think about a $600 video card sitting out in the cold/rain all alone.

I hope you get your problem resolved.

UPS will leaves packages on doorstops. FedEx typically will not.

Not true. Both carriers would leave their packages at the front door depending on the drivers discretion and if the shipper has requested a signature or not. Also other factors such as insurance rates and method of shipment may require a signature.

Signatures by default are not required on either carriers, however, on expedited methods or expensive insurance coverage it is required unless if the shipper waives the requirement.

I have a good relationship with my UPS, FEDEX, DHL drivers so they deliver my packages even if it does require a signature. Mainly for the reason that they trust me and understand that I am always getting packages from the same vendors :) So in this case, it's up to driver discretion.

I used to work for UPS and the general rule of thumb for delivery drivers is do everything you can not to bring the package back. If it's a small enough to place behind a screen door or in a mail box it's alright to leave it there. If it's an apartment or a townhome it's alright to leave it with a neighbor, otherwise bring the package back especially if it is a large item like a monitor, computer, stereo and what not. UPS and FedEx will not just leave a package in my area (not sure if that is saying something lol) but yeah I have to sign for it or they leave it with a neighbor. DHL on the other hand was more than happy to leave my 20" Dell LCD at the front door I was asleep when they dropped it off I woke up and made it to the door just as the driver drove away and my monitor was sitting right there .

Delivered: Front Door
There you go.

Call UPS and tell them your package got stolen from its delivery location - the front door of an apartment. Driver's on the hook for it. They'll launch an investigation and keep you posted. Call them daily.

So am I...There would of been a lawsuit, had I not got my money back...especially since the driver signed for it for me...:p

Not true.

Fair enough, we're both speaking universally and I revoke my statement.

FedEx has never left a package on my doorstep in the fifteen years I've lived here, and that every time they've come by with no one home, they left a message saying it was brought back to the distribution center.

UPS, on the other hand, has always left packages. Not once have I driven to their dist. center to pick up something.

Fortunately for me, both have a dist. center in my city. :D

Sounds like you have an overly laxed UPS driver and a paranoid Fedex driver :) Next time your fedex driver comes to the door, speak to him/her. You can also sign a release claim that they will deliver packages to your door if you are not there.
