I recently assembled a PC and when I push the power button there is just a clicking noise and nothing happens, the noise seems to come from the psu.

the clicking noise only comes the first time when plugging in power cord after that it's dead silent.

These are the components: C2D e6300, XMS2 2pc 1gb PC2 6400 CL 5, Asus P5b, NX-5000 psu, 8800GTX, IDE 300gb seagate HDD, and a yate leon Case.

Any suggestions what could be wrong?

Check the on button on the MB jumpers first. Check all connections three times (hey, it happens). Then try a different PSU to see if you can boot.

there's a troubleshooting sticky guide. go through it and report results.

Sounds like there's something causing a short somewhere.

I had this happen when I accidently let the cpu fan wire get clamped into the case back panel and this caused a short.

Just check everything very carefully, and if you have time, take the motherboard out of the case and run it 'barebones' to see if the problem persists.

yeah, sounds like a short. Check out all your power connectors, especially if you have had one in the past that was difficult to remove. The metal sleeves may have a tendency to pull out of the connector, and this can cause a short if it is touching anything. easy enough fix though.
