Ok i just built this system about an hour ago....

AMD 2500+
Mushkin Blueline PC2700 256MB x2
BioStar M7NCG400

It is only showing that I have 480MB of RAM....

what could be the problem?

Thank You

-Greg-

What exactly is telling you you have that amount of RAM? The BIOS? Or windows?

We need some additional information before we can help ya?

onboard video doesnt come with ram, therefore it shares with the system ram, 32 megs went to onboard video, you can stop worrying now, your ram isnt hiding from you!

Yup. Had the same thing happen when I got my laptop, it was 32 megs short on memory, and turned out to be it had shared video ram.

yeah - that's exactly how it works...

Onboard video sucks. If you can afford it get a regular video card. The difference will be like night and day.

Onboard video is fine if you don't play games. But if you play games, definitely get a regular video card.

wow, i didnt know onboard video took system ram away
how lame...

Well, yeah, onboard video is lame. Just about any video card will be better than your onboard gpu

The Radeon onboards aren't that bad, really. However, the nVidia and Intel onboard graphics really suck. One can play UT2k3 at acceptable framerates on the ATi chipsetted boards.

Yeah, onboard video is "lame" compared to discrete solutions. On Intel, SiS, and VIA boards. nVidia onboard's fine, what are you talking about?

Did any of you bother to take note of what motherboard and memory configuration he's using?

nForce1 integrated video was no slouch—in dual-channel memory configurations, you can easily play (fairly) modern games using it, albeit at reduced detail levels. Hell, my ex-roommate, who uses a SINGLE channel board, plays Halo on nForce1 integrated. nForce1 IGP = slow GeForce2 MX.

nForce2 IGP just pwns compared to other integrated solutions—in a dual channel configuration, which is what BigGreg did, it's quite respectable. Slower than a GeForce4 MX440, but faster than an MX420. AND it supports dual monitors (on some boards). Considering the fact that a separate graphics card that's actually faster than his onboard (and if you complain about it only having 32MB of frame buffer, it can be set to 64MB, and maybe 128MB—I'm not sure about the 128 setting) would be at least $60. That's for a Radeon 9000 Pro, after refurb.

Sometimes it's better to get a board with good onboard video and then get more RAM than it is to skimp on RAM and get a separate graphics card—between (a) refurb Radeon 9000 Pro and 256MB of RAM and (b) nForce2 IGP and 448MB of RAM (I always configure my builds for 64MB frame buffer), I'd take the nForce2 box. I hate trying to run 2000 or XP on 256MB of RAM—it just hurts.

i wish i would have thought of this before, because now my ram isnt running in dual channel

What slot load setup do you have? (Safe bet: put the sticks in OPPOSITE slots, as in 1 & 3.)

Having integrated graphics enabled doesn't disable dual-channel operation; it's actually the main performance justification for dual-channel on the Socket A platform.

Minesweeper kicks ass with onboard video. That's about the best gaming experience you could expect from it. Solitare, especially spider solitare may run a bit choppy. Freecell will only run with the latest drivers installed and DX9b.

nforce 2 igp isnt that bad, you're not gonna be running halo at 1600 rez but, for practically 0 cost its pretty decent.

You can run just about any new game at 800x600 or 640x480, not bad for free. I would consider the onboard video the equiv of a geforce 3 mx (if they had one)

Currently i have a radeon 9000, not that much faster and i have 0 issues playing any games. (athough im upgrading shortly)

Please refrain from cheezing. kthxbye!

BigGreg: Beats me.

haha thats awesome.....im sure this onboard vid will pull off a lot more than that....trust me i have my fair share of experience with old crappy vid cards.....im talking ISA here

Yes, onboard components use an alloted amount of RAM since there is no other source for RAM for these components.
