This forum seemed to "fit" the best for this question.

Has anybody here used online backup systems? I am really interested in Mozy (mainly for price). $5/month for unlimited storage.

Just basically want to hear the good or bad about going this route. I just do not trust physical drives.

I am using Mozy to store ~80GB of data.
The only complaint I have about them is their client software is a bit slow sometimes if you have a lot of files in one collection. (keep in mind that is on a 2.2GHz P4) Other than that, I have had no problems with their service. It's cheap, and so far, it works very well.

Of course, you should take this with a grain of salt, as I have never needed to actually recover all that data from Mozy. I also keep a local backup stored on an external drive, and that is what I usually use to recover my lost files.

I also have an external (would like it to be more future proof than 320gb...but oh well), but want the security of online also.

With Mozy, can you access your files from another computer? Or upload files from another computer?

If you ever had to recover all of it, Mozy could send you the number of DVDs it would take to cover all that data. That's still around 20 DVDs tho.

My big problem with Mozy? If you move to a new system, you have to back that 80gb up all over again. There's no way to point it to the same account.

No. Not unless you have an iSCSI connection to that other computer. Otherwise to backup network shares you need Mozy Pro/Enterprise which costs A LOT more than Mozy Home.

I am using iDrive. It's working well & the support has been great. I highly recommend iDrive.

We do have an interesting argument here.

Mozy? 2GB account for free and "Unlimited" for $4.95/month. I say "Unlimited" because I know some people at 500GB of data backed up and so far Mozy hasn't pulled a "Sorry, read this small writing here, unlimited = 800gb" on them.

IDrive? 2GB account for free and 150GB for $4.95/month.

Both clients look similar in function. I'm partial to Mozy though because I've used it for so long. I do like though that with IDrive you can install on Windows 2003 Server. You need Mozy Pro/Enterprise to do that.

I just signed up for the free account with Mozy. It looks pretty nifty.
