I saw this in the hot deals section and wanted to see if I should get this. I am was planning on setting up a nice surround sound system around next month or so. I was going to go with a 5.1 or 7.1 set from TSC website. I need to get everything. This looks like a nice receiver and the reviews seem to be promising.

Should I get this now or is there a better option that is cheaper? I plan on using an xbox360, and a TV for now. Later on I will be getting a PS3/Blue Ray or possibly or a HTPC.

Thanks for the advice.

I've got an 806 and I love it.

Make sure you have room for it. It needs some room to breath as it gets pretty hot. I've read lots of problems with "blue sparklies" during upconveration. Best I can tell is that is the video processor getting too hot. I've had mine for 6-8 months or so and I've never seen this issue. It's supposedly fixed with the newer chips, too, so that could be why I've never seen it.

It's got LOTS of HDMI. I've got quite a bit hooked up to it and I've still got open ports. Currently I've got:

1. Xbox 360 (HDMI)
2. PS3 (HDMI)
3. Cable Box (HDMI)
4. Media PC (HDMI)
5. Wii (Component)
6. Retro Duo (S Video)

It all goes out to my TV with 1 HDMI cable (which I absolutely love!).

I'm only running in 5.1 mode as I don't have the speakers for 7.1. The receiver supports this so you're not going to miss things.

It's an all around good receiver. Is it the best? Probably not. But it's a helluva deal at $550, or even better at $500 from Accessories for less. If you're in the market for a receiver and this fits your budget, I'd jump on it. If not, I'd wait.

This price fluxuates, too. I was watching this at $599 for a month on a BUNCH of sites (newegg, Amazon, JR, etc). I got paid and went to order and bam -- $999. I ended up getting a refurb from Acecssories for Less becuase I needed a reciever and didn't want to wait for it to come back down, and there was NO WAY I was forking over a grand when I'd just seen it was $500 cheaper as a refurb.

If i were you, I'd try and find a X05 series receiver. The X06 series compared to the X05 is joke. The 805 build quality is a hell of a lot better and the components used are a shit ton better.

Agreed. The 806 is a huge step down from the 805. The 805 is THX Ultra2, now you have to move up 3 models to get Ultra2.

man now im kinda pissed i got the TX-SR706 for 550 and i thought i was getting a deal!
ofc this was a year ago...
other than that though it is a great receiver i can only assume the 806 is better

The 806 has THX Ultra2 plus certification. I'd assume (and I'm probably wrong here, right?) that would be as good as THX Ultra2?

regardles -- just becuase it doesn't have a certification doesn't mean it doesn't sound good. It just means they didn't pay the money for the endorsement.

I realize it's not a direct comparison, but I bought a 607 earlier this year, and I've been REALLY happy with it. Reasonably priced, drives my system (Norh 5.1's with a Polk 10" sub) quite well. It handles input from my sources (Xbox 360, Wii, HTPC w/ Blu, HDDVD and HDDVR) quite nicely. Just an option.
