Onkyo 5.1 surround question...

I have an Onkyo 5.1 surround that I'm trying to optimize for the best surround sound. Recently I found that I could not get true 5.1 surround through fiber optic cable unless I had a sound card that did Dolby Digital Live. So I purchased a Creative Recon3D sound card that does this but I am not happy with it. I'm having lots of issues with the driver and enabling the dolby digital live seems to crackle and switch front and rear speakers at random times.

So how would I optimize this for gaming? I was thinking about going hdmi out to my reciever, but I'm running a 30" Dell at 2560X1600 so a passthrough for Hdmi wouldn't help. Would getting a higher quality soundcard like Asus or HT Omega solve my issue? Are these cards stable with Dolby Digital Live enabled? Please help!!! Thanks

So you are currently using DTS over optical to the receiver?
To get the full uncompressed signal, you will need to use HDMI.
If you can't use your video card for it, then find a sound card with HDMI out.
It really isn't that big of an issue though... especially for gaming.

I only ask because I run optical off the onboard (realtek) to a txsr804, 5.1 is fine over optical, the realtek drivers do DDL 5.1 when applicable, I have no issues at all

You can run HDMI to receiver, and DVI to monitor.

Or you can run DVI to monitor and just analog to receiver.
