Co-worker is an intel fan and I'm no zealot. I just want to make sure he's not getting ripped off. He wants to buy a PC from some small dealer and I just want him to make sure he doesnt get a pinch pennies platform. I'm suggesting, since he wants a 3.0GHz to get a northwood, but I think more importantly he should be shooting for Dual Channel DDR400 so as to not choke the 800fsb. I mean why spend extra and get a 3.0GHz only to throw it in sub par platform. Can he simply ask for the 865/springdale chipset? 865G, 865GV, 865P makes no difference? They all have it?

I tried to just figure this out. I was only able to find one obscure board that didnt do DC400 and that was an intel miniATX. That wouldnt support a 800 cpu anyways so no way he'd get stuck with that. Not everyone was emblazoned with Dual Channel though.

Pretty much any 865 board will support dual channel..

The only thing to watch out for is if the dealer actually sets it up in a Dual channel configuration.

Thanks, He actually made the call with me around and made sure he was gauranteed a DC DDR board to properly sport his 800fsb P4 with of course two sticks for $20 over whatever they had. Place said they even use Asus boards with intel chipsets in all there builds. He's happy with the price and I dont want to help squash the small guys, just make sure they dont cut corners on the stuff that makes Joe Blow's headspin anyways. Nice I dont have to tech support it either.
