hmm...new soundcard or new speakers...dam....HELP!! (NO HEADPHONES PLZ) ( I have a set of Boston Acoustics Speakers 2.1 BA735 and a SB Live!)
 
The answer all depends on what you're going to be listening on your sound system. Music, movies or gaming?
 
Stick with your sound card or if you're willing to get a motherboard, get an nforce 2. And get atleast 5.1 speakers.
 
Audigy2 ZS and Promedia 2.1s. that will be stretching your budget a tad though.

With that budget I would say screw the mediocre 5.1 system and purchase a good 2.1 system. ;)

You could always replace the Audigy2 ZS with the AV-710 and get slightly better sound for a mere 25$.
 
If you're going to buy the audigy gamer you should invest in a 5.1 system to use EAX to bring the game's sound to it's fullest. 2.1 is fine for music but if you're gaming you'd want to be able to hear behind you.
 
I would almost say speakers first. At least to me, the soundstorm is a pretty decent card, and has good 5.1 performance, not top of the class, but still pretty good, so might as well drop it on a good solid 5.1 setup. For gaming, I'd say the Klipsch Ultras since the hit so G------n hard. Then save up for the soundcard. Better making two solid jumps separetely than playing the incremental upgrade game...at least this way you end up spending less on incremental stuff and jsut getting a peice that you want.
 
Save some cash and get some nice speakers. Unlike pretty much all other computer related gear, good speakers will last you years, so spending 500$ once every 5 years [or more] isn't that bad of a deal.
 
idk guys that soundcard is really making me want it more especially with it including 5 games...These speakers I got are the best PC ones i've heard and my dad said they were the best ones he could get 4yrs ago when he got them with his computer..so id much rather leave my crappy sound card then my speaks unless I ever get the chance to hear some really good speakers..But idk maybe its my speakers that make me think my soundcard sux :confused: The certainly sound better then my dads brand-new dell speakers from Harmon/Kardan or w/e..
 
If you can , grab some decent headphones if your friends have any and see how good your soundcard can sound. Or if you have a nice stereo you can move over there wthout getting your parent's wrath, do so, using a miniplug to RCA adaptor and see how good it sounds.

Best way to see if it's the card in my mind is headphones. Even a $20 set of Sony "DJ" cans will often show you how good or badd your soundcard is. Or if you have a Plantronics .90 gaming headset, those are pretty decent too i guess (I never liked them due to how badly they fit my head).
 
is your mobo the nf7-s? or just the nf7? cuz if you have onboard soundstorm then go all out speakers. i've got a set of PM 5.1's hooked up to the soundstorm and they sound just lovely ;)

ABit NF7 the red guy. I did try the headphone thing wit these bigass KOSS headphones amd did notice incredible detail not heard from the speakers, but i don't think speakers can reproduce the kind of detail im talking about, such as the slight difference of sound in the sniper rifles in RvS and even an echo never before heard! EVEN DRIPS in the Prison level :p ...maybe i'm wrong and speakers can do this idk..im really diggin the 5 games and EAX 4.0 on that Audigy tho :(
 
what games are they? chances are if they're older games you can pick them up in a bargain bin or used for like 10 bucks a piece.

depending on your environment, like if you're in the dorms or an apartment then headphones might do you better because they contain the noise and give you equal if not better quality, personally i like having speakers more because they don't cut you off from the outside world as much and when you drop 400 bucks you get some pretty good quality...
 
For $500, you can get speakers that are up there. Swans makes a few really good speaker sets, they are big though. Actually their M-200 set from what I've heard is the shit.

Or you can get a reciever, a par of satellites, and a sub (if money permits), and have a kickass setup. I'd say if you were going brand new, about $700 (if you get NO price breaks) would get you an all Yamaha setup with 6.5" shelf speakers, an 8" sub and a 75wx2 stereo reciever. Overall nearly 300w of "is this imp or my neighbor going to kill me first" :)

Speakers can easily give you some really great sound quality. My speakers beat out even the top of the line sennheiser HD650...makes me regret spending the 350$ they cost sometimes =]
 
lol idk prolly umm heh....i guess a Z-5300 5.1 from logitech because its review on Toms hardware is good..

So is there a big difference between the SB Live! and the Audigy 2 ZS then? Except the 7.1 thang! I was going to post this same question so I thought I would just jump in here! I have a seriously expensive Eltax 5.1 setup which I'm happy with so the reason for the upgrade is 'cos I'm interested in the EAX side of things. Does it make a big difference - the new EAX, that is?
 
I quit using Tom's as any kind of reference for anyhting anymore...his biases annoy me too much.

In general most review sites fall into this too much, advertising instead of reviewing. I still remember that one site (not naming it here), that actually hated the Dexxa optical mouse so badly they had a picture of it being urinated on....now THAT is reviewing....maybe not proper reviewing...but they sure did get the point across that it was a bad product instead of doing like everyone else and hailing it as the ned all be all of mice.


BTW, the Dexxa mouse can bite my butt.....it really is a peice of crep.
 
Where they Koss 3AAs? Those are some really mean headphones for the price. Much better than the Pro4AAs.

It was a joke, everyone is always accusing toms of being heavily NV and Intel biased. I will agree that he always seems to get higher benches on those p4's than most sites, but his reviews aren't terrible. I'm pretty sure that people aren't too biased about speakers, at least not comp speakers =]
 
I love how paranoid he is..... everything is a conspiracy and everyone is out to get him.

im starting to think on getting the soundcard first because 1. its only 140 2. ill be more likely to be able to get a 4.1 PM on christmas then my b-day 3. i can use headphones until i get the speakers and get great sound instead of crap sound from good speakers
