Heres what i got and what im looking to do. this is some old hardware so the challenge is on;)

I have an old set up im looking to try to overclock so i dont have to break the bank to get my son a newer system just yet.

components:

amd athlon 64 x2 3800 2.0ghz
centon pc3200 (200mhz) ddr ram (3x1gb)
foxconn 6150 mobo!

looking to try to overclock to 2.5 or higher if possible. currently i can oc to 220mhz with stock multi of 10x simply by raising the cpu freq but will not post at any higher settings.

any suggestions or example settings? im pretty new to ocing so i think my mem is gonna be a restriction but i would like to try to squeeze every little bit or juice out of this dino any help would be great...oh yeah the bios on this board is pretty good i have access to a lot of settings to oc.
thanks in advance.

From what I remember the X2 3800+ should be able to hit 3.0 fairly easy. It's been a while but I would start with loosening your ram timings, change the command rate to 2T & make sure the ram is running at the proper voltage. I would also suggest you lock the pci bus at 100 mhz.

Then start increasing your fsb. Keep us posted.

I'm not so sure with above ... I'd think you're gonna have to get Ram out of 1 to 1 ratio away from the fsb. Since it's only DDR400 it probably is at the enge of failing since you're at 220 already. Look for a memory divider setting in BIOS. Most times just enabling manual memory settings will allow you to set memory to lets say 166fsb so then when you push the CPU fsb this will give you the extra headroom on the ram. Lastly I think 3ghz is near impossible. 2.5 is easy 2.6 2.7 is going to be on the lucky side of oc.

I was able to hit 2.88GHz out of my old S939 3800+ X2. I had the voltage at 1.55v on an Asus mobo. Just play around with voltages and memory dividers until you get where you can.

1.55v and stock cooling will have that chip's temp in triple digits.. and I mean celcius.

ok was messing around last night and i was able to hit 236 on the cpu freq but then i would keep getting cmos check sum error...any suggestions.

also i made a mistake the board is a foxconn 6100k8ma-rs (bet the rs stands for really slow :)

some of the available setting in bios i have are as follows: There are many more but i figured if there was something im overlooking that would help someone might be able to mention it.

cpu freq
pcie clock
cpu multiplier can only go down from 10x
ht spread spectrum
K8<->NB HT SPEED
NB-->SB HT SPEED
NB<--SB HT SPEED
dram config
memclock index
all the timing options

250 fsb
10 multy
4 ht (5 is default) this needs to be around 1000 (4x250)
set the ram to 166 (with the fsb at 250 it will run at 208)
i would also take out the third 1gb ram stick. 939's don't play nice with more then 2 ram sticks.

thanks tricky i will give those a shot...just out of curiosity what is the formula used to figure out the ram speed you said setting to 166 will make it run at 208 just curious of the formula for future test.
thanks

tricky could you possibly take a look at the bios link i provided and tell me if i have this right... to set the divider would i use the memclock index section and set it to 166mhz or is the divider located somewhere else...

thanks

i looked at it and im really not sure. i had an asus board and it just had memory settings (133, 166, 200). i would try 133 and boot up and see what cpuid says. go from there.

so i attempted last night to put the settings to what you suggested 250 fsb 4x ht speed memory to 133 and it would not post...i was able to get 2.25ghz with fsb at 225 multi at 10x 4x ht speed and 166 mem. and it posted...i messed around with a lot of scenarios with the settings but this was the only one i could get to work ive seen so many post of people getting better results witht he same gear i have but i think its just finding the right combo of settings in the bios. so i think im officially at a wall here. but i guess 225 is better than 200. im gonna keep trying so if anyone else comes up with some good suggestions they would be greatly apprieciated.
thanks again

My old gaming rig from home is now my system at work. It's got an old ABit mobo and an AthlonX2 3800+. I got it up to 2.5ghz, but took it down to 2.4ghz because I was using stock cooling and it had a bad habit of overheating. I would think 2.5 is easy to hit. I remember people getting to 2.8+.

in my test last night i dropped down to two sticks of 1gb ram then i replaced the 3rd after not being able to achieve the 250fsb so now currently at 225 with 3 gb of ram
