I have the RealTek ALC850 onboard sound. My powered subwoofer sounds so-so but my headphones sound real tinny, as in tin cans. I have quality headphones too. Is this a common problem with onboard sound and if so why do they advertise this as high end. My motherboard is an K8T Neo 2. I need deep bass sound when i play games.
 
Onboard sound is generally bad quality (exception being NVidia's Soundstorm). I too have onboard Realtek sound, and it is truely horrible.. You're gonna want to get a sound card ;)
 
What are you using as a media player?
We may be able to help you get the best out of your onboard solution.....
 
I dont know about your specific board, but there is either an option in the bios, or a jumper somewhere on the board. Consult manual. ;)
 
Restart push the del key and navigate to the integrated peripherals section.
Be careful cause you can cause your system to not boot if you change the wrong settings. ;)
 
well...if ur speakers sounds fine..but ur head phones dont..what kind are they anyways? they might be underpowered..and needs an amp.....
 
I've exhausted all avenues and come to the conclusion that its just a sucky onboard audio chip. High end, i dont think so. screw you RealTek.
 
Pretty much all onboard sound has crappy output, unless you are using the digital outputs. Then you are effectively bypassing most of the sound implementation.

Are your speakers stereo? A Chaintech AV-710 can provide a very decent stereo signal for very little money, only $28.
 
I'm being forced to use my onboard sound whenever I play CS:S, since for some reason my Revo 5.1's input isn't recognized by windows.

Let me just get to the point. Walking is like moonwalking on a blackboard with nails for feet. Gunfire sounds like a riot at the cardboard factory. Everytime I tell windows CP to use the ACL97 as my primary sound device a little part of my soul dies.

yeah go for a chaintech AV-710 or an audigy2 ZS.

For the price and the performance the chaintech is nicer.

If the features of the audigy tempt you , then go for it...just IMO nothing higher end than the standard ZS....SB higher than the ZS and you are just throwing out cash IMO.
 
I hear the onboard HD audio implentations on Intel's new boards (as well as Asus 955 premium board) are fantastic. Anyone vouch for this? I'm sure they beat the crap out of AC97...
 
They're still built generally within the budgets of typical onboard solutions. They're not miracles.
 
Some onboard sound is great, but they usually have one or two design flaws that will continue to piss you off if you go to anything beyond $100 computer speakers.

My soundstorm has a nice high pitch squeal up in the higher treble area. Thanks to my very sensitive ears , that sound really gets me annoyed fast. What it was is there was a design flaw that allowed for noise from the USB to be picked up by the output stage of the soundcard. The flaw is the output stage should have been a few layers in and had grounds around it to act as a shield of sorts....but didn't.
 
anyone use the msi k8n neo4 sli plat onboard sound? (i do) how does it compair to a decent sound card? My speakers are z-5500 and I listen to music, play games, watch tv and dvds on my computer all the time. Is it worth it to get a sound card? what is digital sound like? and how do I get it?
