I'm am looking at purchasing a sata drive. I have a Gigabyte 7n400 Pro (rev. 1) and I know have an onboard silicon image sata controller. How does the speed of this compare to a pci addon card? I don't plan on raid and it will coexist with some pata drives. Thanks a lot...

it wont make a difference with one drive. Go onboard if your mb supports it. Only if you are running raid or something will it matter. The pci bus maxes out around 110mb/s

does anyone know if specifically the onboard sata on my mobo is any good?

using a card will require the HDs to use the PCI bus. because that is shared with all other PCI cards (including AGP), it will negatively impact your performance. how significant the impact is, i do not know.

i also do not know about your specific board, sorry.

I'm pretty sure all of the SI chipsets use the PCI bus so that will not be the limiting factor. That being said, all the reviews I have read (no first hand experience) say the SI chips have relatively high CPU overhead so if performance is an issue I would go with an add in card.

The talon is supposed to make the Raptor 40% faster than an onboard solution... Would this be of any use to someone who isn't going to running an exclusive server? Would it be worth the money? I'm guessing not, but it's definitel interesting. I'll probably just end up buying the raptor and find out what happens. Wish there were some reviews of the talon controller.
