onboard raid or raid card?

You will not notice the speed burst on an everyday system from RAID. And I assume you're talking about RAID0. You will however notice the speed of the 10K raptors. Also, it's true that the 680 is limited in RAID0 (110mb onboard RAID). But you will hardly notice a difference between the onboard and the host card with only two drives ;) So you're striker should perform quite well. Well that's all the help I can give right now. I'll be back in 2 months :D Lates

ok, so if i stick to onboard.
i guess ill have to wait 2 months for a reply? lol
would i notice a difference in games or anything?
cheers

would the onboard nvidia raid of my striker be better than this?

Well, it depends. If you define `better' as cheaper, then your nVidia solution wins, since you have already paid for it. If `better' means portable across comptuers, then the add-in card wins.

After reading a `horror' story on here about the S-Cure card from PNY, I am biased against add-in cards from companies that are not traditional providers of storage solutions. As such i would stay far away from the card you linked.

If you are looking for an add-in solution, I would consider cards from Highpoint-Tech, Promise, Areca, 3Ware, LSI and Intel. Of course, we could start the whole `RAID-0 does (does not) improve gaming performance' discussion, but I am too tired.

QFT, good hardware costs money, if u want something good and reliable avoid the onboard RAID controllers

my onboards fine...
i was just wondering if i would get more from a raid card?

Not anything noticeable for your usage. But if you had 6xraptors in raid0 and were using it for a server ...:D

PS. I'm in Gatwick, London right now. I'm on a pc at the hotel which uses KDE 3.5 :D

haah, cheers for the reply. if i ever go for 4 raptors, which is looking quite likely ill get a raid card :D

Most onboard RAID 'controller' are software based and not true hardware RAID controllers.

err, i believe my nvidia chip is hardware, i also have a silicon image raid chip? :S

No, it's not. Basic rule- in order for it to be hardware RAID, you're going to need some ram on the board itself. Compare to something like an Areca 1210, which has 256MB DDR333 ECC onboard and an onboard processor.

so would i see much of an improvement getting a raid card?

Not at all with that setup. The onboard software is more than enough for you usage. You seem like an average user. I'm gonna save you a whole lot of reading and myself a whole lot of typing and just say stick with onboard (for now ;) )

Cheers from Gatwick

lmao you still at gatwick?
ok, ill stick with on-board, but if i ever get drunk and order 6 raptors, il get a raid card.
saying that, my neighbour works for WD, do they get staff discounts?
