Onboard audio - gigabyte ud3r/realtek 889

Just put together my new build using

Gigabyte x58 ud3r mobo
win 7 HP 64 bit

Everything seems fine except the onboard sound -- playback is great through speakers or headset, but mic input is sooooo low even with boost and 100% volume. Tried latest realtek HD drivers and ports in back (vs case ports), no change.

Thoughts? Seems like I've seen some similar threads elsewhere especially regarding windows 64 bit maybe...

Sound in general is quite fine, hate to have to get a sound card just for mic improvement...
 
With a sound card, you won't just get mic improvement but you'll also get audio improvement :)
