on linux trying to create a banner but it gets erased after updates/ upgrades

I try to use rc.local and by copying what I want for the banner so everytime after upgrades and so on that under rc.local I would copy and overwrite the motd file but it still doesn't do anything any ideals?

Different distributions tend to handle this differently, so who knows in your situation until you clarify. What I can say is, generally the motd file is a link to the actual file. find where the link points to and modify that file instead.
