Went to bestbuy to pick up 2x 4850 cards cause of the 25% off visiontek crads.. total 4 2 cards 300 plus tax. I was ready to pay it to.at the register the total came up to 216 $ i thought to my self what ? anyways i thought to myself it must be the rewards program right ? later investigating no its not the rewards program the girl didnt ring it up or the computer messed up ..!! wahoo 4850 for 100$ plus tax !! or 2 4850's for 200 plus tax depending how u look at it ..

Wow i lucked out.

Lucky guy! I remember when the Geforce3 ti200 came out and I went to pick it up at Circuit City. Somehow the guy marked it wrong and it got rung up for $100.

I would say its mean to accept an obvious price error (id prolly do it anyway lol), but honestly I just cant feel bad for worst buy.
 
damn nice deal! thought i got it good when i got 2 HD4850's for $290 from best buy, after tax and all.
 
i think it was a double special sale. 25% off AND buy 1 for 150 get another one for 50 bucks
 
one has to wonder at what point is AMD actually losing their ass on these cards....in an effort to stay in the game....but it seems self destructive, i dont think AMD is in a financial position to do much of this....especially when Nvidia can go much lower for much longer, AMD would lose the "who can go lowest for the longest" battle i am sure....

i mean look at NV too with $200 9800GTX's......those were like $600 inside of a year ago maybe? of course they sold so many G80's and G92's up until now they made their money a long time ago....

whats next? $50 high end cards? i mean, yeah, sounds nice, but in the end this would be a really bad thing

The 9800GTX was never over $400 to my knowledge.

still, half price in how long? has it even been a full year since 9800GTX launch? things are very unstable in the discrete graphics market right now is all i can say....not huge profit margins i would imagine

VisionTek is taking the hit here not AMD.
 
Good question but probably VisionTek. I'm sure they knock the money off when they sell it to BB. Just a guess.

I don't think anyone takes a hit here.
BestBuy gets the card from Visiontek at highly discounted, wholesale prices, which are probably still less than $150 per card.

I'm pretty sure its the retailer that is loosing money on these, they are selling them at random under the MSRP, I'm sure for sales tactics just to get people in their store.

Hell when the GF2 GTS came out, I got run up for the same price as a Geforce1 DDR (which was $90 at the time with a $25 off special).

MSRP and wholesale are two different price levels.
I bet BestBuy is still making money selling them at $150 or even less.
 
Nothing at my BB. Then again, I haven't seen a video card remotely resembling a "high-end" card in a while over there.

Yes, we don't know this if they are or not, but my guess is they are being that I've sold hardware before and retailers don't get the hardware for a lot less then retail value is.

But my post was under the assumption they were loosing money, I don't know or care, I just like lower prices and when the 4870 comes out if its at a good price then it has a home next to my brand new 9450 (which is waiting for a video card for me to boot up).

You've sold hardware before? Where?
And if the big chain retailers don't get hardware for a lot less (the do), then how do they manage to stay in business with humongous B&M overhead (compared to on-line stores).

I think NVIDIA is the only one worried about ATIs pricing this round. Ati is getting twice as many useable chips per waffer and that is the most expensive part af these cards.

Uhh, no, current and past gen nVidia chips, compaired to current and past gen ATi's Chips(R600, ie 2900xt exclused as those were bad, and well not made for long, 3870's, ie R670 have good yeilds), , are expensive to produce, while ATi's Chips are much ceaper, you gotta realise, that ATi could drop prices massively atm, and STILL be making much more Margiun wise than nVidia due to the fact AMD's GPU's are currently much cheaper to produce (not only are they smaller die size per gpu, which means more GPU's per wafer, ATi's current gen cards have a way better return of working gpus per wafer than nVidia's GPU's

Again, not only are they getting twice as many per wafer, MORE of them % wise are useable (less defect rate) than nVidia's current GPU's

yeah, but i am having my doubts as to if they are still making money off of these....i mean, if you sell 100 gpu's at $10 profit each that's only $1000, but if you sell 100 gpu's at $30 profit each, thats $3,000......i have no idea, doubt anyone aside from internal AMD/NV people know what their margins are, but it's hard to imagine AMD actually turning an acceptable profit on these with prices like this...and we all know after the last couple years or so they could use the profits to be even more competitive ......

dont get me wrong, i own stock in neither, but it would suck to get all these good "deals" and then AMD suddenly announce they are stopping their discrete GPU developement because they have to give their parts away to sell them...

They are (were) $199 everywhere. The trick was that BestBuy was running a 25% off sale on all Visiontek cards, bringing the 4850 down to $150.
June 21 was the last day.

Yes, they do make money... Not as much as they could thanks to the Nvidia's overpriced line-up.
But remember, ATI are not only after profits per chip. They also want to take a significant chunk out of the Nvidia's market share. And the fastest way to increase your market share is by selling a competitive product at rock-bottom prices.
