Do the older Steam games run on the newer computers? I would like to play the Thief series but as I remember there were some problems with it and new computers on install.
I bought Deus Ex human revolution and never could get it to play on my machine. Steam refunded my money after I gave up trying to get it to work.
I just hate to buy these older games if they don't run on the newer machines.

Most will, jut look at the system specs before buying. I wanted to buy some of the older Cossacks games yesterday but none of them run on Win8.1 and above so won't buy any of them. The first two Thief games use Dosbox so will run on even Linux. It's the Windows games you have to watch out for because Microsoft messes with things. Like banning Securom DRM from Windows after it has already been used in hundreds of games. You will be mostly OK though.

maybe I will just try gog then. I think they guarantee their games to work, not positive but I thought that was what I had read.

Will depend on the game. I've gotten very old Steam games to work on my sig rig, like the original Max Payne. But there's patch for it that was also need for Windows 7 as well. Then there are some more recent games, like the original Dirt I've not been able to get to work on my sig rig, though apparently there are fixes for Windows 10 that work for others.

GOG.com patches their games to work on newer systems. They have stuff from the beginning of PC gaming I bet.

The VERY old games uses DOSBox to get working, since DOS is a relic that hasn't been supported for the past 2 decades almost.

So far all of my steam games and GOG games, even the very old ones, run without any hitches, although my oldest one (Raptor: Call of the Shadows) uses DOSBox too.

The only games I did have problems running were, ironically, newer games at least when the problems surfaced (Fallout 3 on multicored systems and CoH2 on windows 8.1).
