Older PC Games

Nice list! Especially Star Control II and the Ultimas. Some people complain, but if you haven't, I'd highly recommend U8: Pagan. It's ridiculously atmospheric, nice dark setting, and while not exactly like the others in the series, is amazingly cool. You know you can do all of that with DOSBox right. ;) Still pretty cool to play with archaic tech though I have to admit!

Yes, but Dosbox doesn't allow the "perfect" emulation of games....i wanted the original feel of playing those games, with the clacky-clack of the hard drive, the static sound of my original Sound Blaster Pro 2.0, and the CRT monitor.

Dosbox is great for a lot of games...but I like my original hardware. ;-)

Can't say I play many old games anymore, but some of my fondest computer gaming memories come from those days. We bought a CD ROM for our 386 back when they were brand new - it came with a (maybe first generation) Sound Blaster and a Lucas Arts game pack. I went from playing cheesy pre-installed games with only PC speaker sounds to Secret Weapons of the Luftwaffe, The Secret of Monkey Island, Loom (and others) with full, proper sound effects. It was magnificent.

oh man i had that same exact pack.

I had this pack as well. I was 11 or 12 at the time. Secret Weapons of the Luffwaffe was kinda complicated for me then. I think a Lemmings game was included as well. I hated Loom because I just didn't (and still don't) have an ear for musical notes. I played countless hours of The Secret of Monkey Island. It probably took me over a year to figure out how to finally complete it. I recently bought and played through the newer Monkey Island chapters on a Steam sale. I enjoyed them for the nostalgia.

rct is great but it's all about lode runner mofos!

PS get the dinky park custom map for RCT2. helllll yeahhhhh

Haha, I remember those "value" packs of games that they used to sell in CD-ROM form that hung from pegs on the end of aisles at retail stores. They usually contained 12-15 discs in sleeves that were joined together so that you could see the title & art of each disc. Sometimes they had some decent content, but many times it was a crapshoot and a way to sell shitty software by bundling it with decent games.

One of the most epic things I remember stumbling upon was the Quake shareware disc. It came in a really cool CD case, but the best thing about this particular disc is that id Software included a copy of every game it had ever made, from Wolf 3D to Quake. You could play demos of each game, but since the disc contained the full version of each, you could call a 1-800 number and give your CC info in exchange for an unlock key for each game that you wanted to buy. Someone ended up writing a crack for this disc that would unlock EVERY game on it. So with one disc you had full versions of each awesome id FPS game up to that point. I think I had pretty much bought them all by that point anyway, but that was really something to behold. I think I still have the disc but have looked for the crack file over the years and it appears that it was lost long ago. I think it was called qcrack.exe.

Just installed the first Roller Coaster Tycoon. Gonna get the Loopy Landscapes + Corkscrew Follies add-ons tonight (at my parents' house). Man, I forgot how fun this game is! I do love me some older games. Easy to run, and hours of fun.

For the FYI - I was 10 when we first got it in 1999, and I played it on our Pentium 2 400 Mhz. I was so proud of how fast that computer was - it was able to play the game without slow down, even if there was a ton of people on screen. :D

how are you guys getting these old pc games to work anyways? I just bought Max Payne 1 and 2 on the steam holiday sale and with lots of tweaking around i have finally made MP 1 work, 2 still won't work. And these games aren't even that old compared to 15-20 year old games. i would love to play "Full Throttle" but have no idea how that's going to happen.

Believe it or not, it can be harder to get some games of that era working correctly than old DOS games. DOSBox does a superb job with DOS games in most cases. But for some of the early 3D games that were built for Win 95/98/XP or require an antiquated version of DirectX...THOSE can be a pain. Think games like Tomb Raider, Thief and System Shock 2 (without patches), Need for Speed 2, Medal of Honor, etc. A lot of late 90s/early 2000s games can be a real pain to get running on newer systems.

Some recent change in drivers or windows has broke max payne 2 for just about everyone. Set the comparability mode to windows 98 seems to make it work for some reason. Also grab this for widescreen for the steam version.
