My friend's brother has a Pentium 4 3.0GHz that he uses to play kiddie games on. He claims it's over heating at 52 deg celsius.. is that hot for a Pentium 4?

Before he took off the HSF and reapplied Thermal Paste, he said he would run the computer for 5 minutes.. it would lock up.. he would restart and freeze when he gets into windows... and he is almost sure it's the temperature of the Processor.

I'm not really familiar with old processors.. but does anyone have any input?

The cooler is an aftermarket ASUS cooler. Not sure which one.
 
I dont think so, mine would get up to about 50 c playing bf2 (p4 northwood 3.0) and the prescotts run even hotter.
 
look at it under a bright light as it starts? spins? dust?

does he have a pci-slot exit fan? one near my p4 "seemed" to
prevent bsod's (nothing verifiable)

he cleaned it out of dust.

It's on board graphics so not sure..

but i told him to reseat and clean with rubbing alcohol (he just used microfiber cloth to wipe it away) and the temperatures are lower now. 32 degrees with all fans running at 35% but the side of the case is off.
 
I don't think it would be overheating. My old P4 (S478 3GHz) idled in the 50 or so (no EXACTLY sure since the temp sensor was never right).

Anyway, what about the RAM? It's possible he could have bad RAM. You know, one of those issues that pops up out of no where.
 
52C isn't too hot at all.

I run a P4 2.6C overclocked to 3ghz. I have the stock HSF with pretty low RPM case fans for quiet, and if I run 2-instances of Prime95 (hyperthreading FTW :D ) my temps max out at 60C. I ran Prime95 like that for 12 hours, so I'm pretty sure it's stable.

I've had the computer for years, so I would say 52C is fine. Damn fine.

Also, if his is a prescott, it probably runs hotter than mine, so 52C is good under full load.
 
My p4 hits 60c under load and I've never had any problems with it... had it for like 6 years.
 
Northwoods should run under 50 if possible, and 55 is about the tops you would want to run it at. Prescotts seems to idle that high, they are mucho caliente! Abit boards (like the IS7) read the CPU about 5-8 C higher than everyone else though.
 
My P4 Prescott 630 (3ghz) would idle as high as 66-67c on stock cooling.

Note that this is the mobo's temp, they don't have a DTS like Core 2's do. The actual CPU was probably somewhere near 70c.

Unless it goes over 100, you'll be fine.

I used to have the Pentium 4 3.06 w/HT and it was a bad ass CPU for the time. I mean, it was a huge performance boost over my 2.6ghz P4.

No, that's not hot for that chip, at load. If he's idling there, then he's over heating. That chip on load shouldn't go over 55-60. If he goes over 60, it's to hot.
